Matthew Modine's Full Metal Jacket Diary (FMJD) iPad app was awarded the "Best App" distinction at the New Media Film Festival on Wednesday evening. "My team wanted to create an app that Stanley Kubrick would say was cool. This was the benchmark of everyone that worked to bring this amazing, award-winning application to life. This app is simply cool," said Modine. During the awards ceremony, Modine announced he would begin offering a free download of the first chapter, allowing anyone with an iPad to sample the critically-acclaimed "appumentary."

"The Full Metal Jacket Diary iPad App took various forms of media and layered them for an interactive experience that takes you on a journey from all sides of storytelling. A truly remarkable app," said Susan Johnston, the Founder and Director of the New Media Film Festival.

About the app:
The FMJD app takes fans of legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick on a rare, behind-the-scenes journey through the making of the 1987 Vietnam War masterpiece. Modine's diary chronicles the nearly two years it took to complete the film and features an audiobook experience married to hundreds of stunning never-before-seen photographs taken by him on location.

Praise:
Hailed as an "appumentary" by Entertainment Weekly and selected by Gizmodo as their "iPad App of the Week," Modine's app is being praised by critics and fans alike.

"When Matthew Modine first published his Full Metal Jacket Diary in 2005, he gave me an unprecedented glimpse into the working methods of cinema's most enigmatic director. Now re-imagined into a gorgeous iPad app, Modine's visual diary remains the most personal and first-hand accounting of what it was like to work with Stanley Kubrick. I savored every word." Lee Unkrich, Director/Co-Director, Toy Story 3, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc.

"The Full Metal Jacket Diary app creates a world you get to live in. And who wouldn't want to be on set with Stanley Kubrick?" Tim Kirk, Producer, ROOM 237

FMJD is "something Stanley Kubrick would be proud of," said Wired Magazine, adding that it's "about as close to a behind-the-scenes documentary as you can get without actual video."

"FMJD is a new and unique experience for users of Apple's popular tablet, and its innovative format is one I can easily see other books emulating in the months and years ahead." Big Picture Big Sound.com
