Celebrate International Jazz Day with David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band & the Louis Armstrong House Museum at Birdland on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 5:30 pm. The band will include Bria Skonberg, trumpet; Adrian Cunningham, clarinet and alto sax, Wycliffe Gordon, trombone; Vince Giordano, banjo and guitar; Rajiv Jayaweera, drums.
David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band, now in its fourteenth year of residency at New York City's fabled Birdland, is driven by all aspects of Satchmo's inspirational character - not only his musical genius, but also his model for living a proper life. During its unequalled run, the band has played Armstrong's theme song "When It's Sleeptime Down South" over 2,000 times loving it and Armstrong more each time.
Legendary record producer
George Avakian has said of the band: "Throughout the years, I learned a lot about life at Louis' side, at his home, as well as on the road and in the studio. And no one brings that home more to me than
David Ostwald, whose band continues to play Pops's music every week at Birdland."
Birdland is located at 315 West 44th Street in NYC. Tickets for the Jazz Day celebration are $25 and there is a $10 food/drink minimum per person. Tickets include a complimentary guest pass to the
Louis Armstrong House Museum. Doors at
Birdland open at 5:00 pm; set time is 5:30 pm. For tickets go to
BirdlandJazz.com.
April 30th was designated "International Jazz Day" by the
United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2011. This International Jazz Day program is the culmination of the Jazz Appreciation Month program at the
Louis Armstrong House Museum featuring The Real
Ambassadors exhibit. Jazz Appreciation Month is a major initiative of the Smithsonian Institution.
