Multi-award-winning director and bookwriter James Lapine discusses the concept for the eagerly awaited upcoming HBO documentary on iconic composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim as part of a new featurette now available to view.

"It's a film about a great friend of mine as well as a collaborator," Lapine says about his SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, INTO THE WOODS, PASSION and SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM artistic cohort.

"I was sort of fascinated with trying to translate how he works and who he is and how an artist makes something and came upon the idea of just taking six of his songs and refracting his life through the six songs," Lapine teases of the unique concept of the project.

Furthermore, Lapine concludes, "I think that by watching this film you'll have a really unique opportunity to see art being born."

SIX BY SONDHEIM airs December 9 on HBO.
