Eternal Blessedness for All? explores the reinterpretation of the Doctrine of Predestination undertaken by the German theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834), the acclaimed father of modern theology.

Predestination is one of the several contested issues that divided the Reformed and Lutheran traditions after the Reformation. By assessing Schleriermacher's interpretation of predestination in its original context, Anette Hagan critically explores the historical, as well as the theological, ecumenical, and political situation in which his thinking took shape.

A proponent of ecumenism, Schleiermacher sought the unity of the Protestant Church's Reformed and Lutheran strands in the early nineteenth-century. His investigation of predestination encouraged him to move away from the traditional position that distinguishes between the elect and the reprobate, instead championing the notion of universal restoration. Schleiermacher's position has cast him as a novel thinker, and Hagan looks closely at the evolution of his theory through a close study of his 1819 essay 'On the Doctrine of Election', Christian Faith, his major work, and other related sources such as his sermons.

Looking carefully at the contemporary reception of his heterodox, universalist reinterpretation of the traditional Reformed doctrine of double predestination and of Lutheran alternatives, Hagan examines the reasons for his failure to convince his peers. Through her assessment of the importance of Schleiermacher's work as a theologian, Hagan provides a valuable study of 'one of the most significant renderings of the doctrine of election since the Reformation' (David Fergusson), which will appeal to students and theologians alike.
