Canal Park Playhouse will launch THE BACK ROOM READING SERIES, a new monthly play reading series, with Susan Bernfield's TANIA IN THE GETAWAY VAN, directed by Portia Krieger. The reading of TANIA IN THE GETAWAY VAN TANIA IN THE GETAWAY VAN takes place on Wednesday, April 18 at 7 PM at Canal Park Playhouse (508 Canal Street, between Greenwich and West Streets in Tribeca). 1975, the San Francisco Bay Area.  If all the moms are going back to school, whose coming-of-age is it anyway? Set against the backdrop of the Patti Hearst trial, Susan Bernfield's TANIA IN THE GETAWAY VAN is an imaginative peek back in time at the second wave of the feminist movement.

THE BACK ROOM READING SERIES, curated by playwrights Joe Roland (On the Line) and Emily DeVoti (Milk), was created as a way of expanding the downtown artistic community. Audience members are encouraged stay and have a drink and discuss the plays in the Front Room after the readings.

The cast of TANIA IN THE GETAWAY VAN features Drama Desk and Obie-winning actor Heidi Schreck (Circle Mirror Transformation), Jenny Seastone Stern (Wooster Group's North Atlantic), Emily Louise Perkins (f-ing Art* by Bekah Brunstetter), Obie-winning actress Brenda Currin (Charles Mee's Vienna: Lusthaus) and Irene Sofia Lucio (Romeo and Juliet at Yale Rep).

Susan Bernfield's (playwright) full-length works include Stretch (a fantasia), Big Hungry World, Barking Girl, Out From Under It and a solo musical, Tiny Feats of Cowardice, and they've been presented or developed by, among others, People's Light & Theatre, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Soho Think Tank's Ice Factory Festival, the Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference, Lark Play Development Center, Playwrights Horizons, Adirondack Theatre Festival, FringeNYC, Magic Theatre, Vital Theatre Company, Peculiar Works Project and New Georges, which she founded in 1992 and where she remains the producing artistic director.
