Last year, BroadwayWorld.com, the largest theater website on the Internet, launched a comprehensive Student Database listing college and university performing arts programs across the country. This free service makes it easier for prospective students by showcasing programs searchable by schools, location, degrees and concentrations.

With the new school year in full gear, BWW has updated the fully-interactive Student Show Calendar with 2011-2012 student productions. We have also made it easy for schools to upload photos, videos, cast lists, articles and other media content for each of their shows. In addition, BWW will be combing through all content regularly and will launch weekly feature stories highlighting productions locally and nationally that have provided us with this extra content.

Today, BWW is thrilled to announce that this week's School Spotlight goes to the Department of Performing Arts at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina! Elon University's Department of Performing Arts offers pre-profesional Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Acting, Dance and Music Theatre, and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Theatrical Design and Production as well as Theatre Studies. With a focus on individual attention (aided by small class sizes), students enrolled at Elon receive a conservatory-style training in the arts all the while gaining the knowledge and practical experience to pursue graduate studies or transition into a professional career. A vital part of the student curriculum at Elon University is the importance placed on performance experience and opportunities. Students are encouraged to become involved in productions from their first year of studies. Elon is home to the Center for the Arts, a 75,000-square-foot facility designed for teaching and performance which houses three theaters as well as numerous dance and practice studios.

The product of the comprehensive study curriculum can be seen in the many productions the Department features every year. The 2011-2012 season started with productions of 'Getting Out' by Marsha Norman, 'Dancing in the Landscape', and 'Hair', amongst others. On stage now is 'Macbeth' running in the Black Box Theatre from January 19 to 23 and again from February 1-4. Upcoming shows include 'She Loves Me', 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Tapped Out', student-directed one acts as well as other dance and acting showcases. For more information and to get tickets, click here

Elon alumni have gone on to successful performing careers with roles in movies and television, regional theater, national tours, and on the Broadway stage in such shows as 'Hair', 'Ragtime', 'Follies', 'Wicked', 'West Side Story' and 'In The Heights' to name but a few. Check out the impressive list of alumni credits here

Congratulations to the Department of Performing Arts at Elon! BWW wishes you continued success in your studies and your future career!
