Alan Cumming to Produce Sundance Channel Series Based on AIDS Activist Morellet
Variety reports today that SundanceTV has announced an ambitious development slate which features a variety of limited-run series.
Among those is a project to be produced by Broadway's Alan Cumming, "inspired by the life of colorful New York City restauranteur and AIDS activist Florent Morellet. Morellet is credited with revitalizing Manhattan's meatpacking district with his restaurant that became a hotbed of activity for the gay rights movement."
Says SUNDANCE TV programming chief Nena Rodrigue of the upcoming projects, "We're looking for people who have great vision and great clarity on what it is they want to say. If we as executives are invested in it and have clarity on what the project is going to be, then we support it and we don't try to develop it into something else."
Alan Cumming currently stars as the Emcee in the Broadway revival of Cabaret. His London stage appearances include Hamlet, the Maniac in Accidental Death of an Anarchist (for which he received an Olivier Award), the lead inBent, and the National Theatre of Scotland's The Bacchae. On Broadway he has appeared in The Threepenny Opera, the master of ceremonies inCabaret (for which he won a Tony Award), and Design for Living.
His best-known film roles include his performances in Goldeneye, Spy Kids, andX2. Cumming also introduces Masterpiece Mystery! for PBS and appears on The Good Wife, for which he has been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Satellite Award.
