2012 Tony Awards Heading Back to the Beacon Theatre!
The American Theatre Wing's 66th Annual Tony Awards will return to New York City's Beacon Theatre in June 2012. This will be the second year in a row that the show will be broadcast live from The Beacon Theatre, which is part of the Madison Square Garden portfolio of venues. The theatre holds 2,894 seats, which is 3,000 seats less than its previous home of Radio City Music Hall.
The Tony Awards were held in a Broadway Theatre 1967 through 1996, and moved to Radio City Music Hall in 1997, where they remained until the 2011 ceremony (with the exception of the 1999 ceremony).
The Antoinette Perry "Tony" Award, which was founded by the American Theatre Wing in 1947, is bestowed annually on theatre professionals for distinguished achievement on Broadway. The Tony is one of the most coveted awards in the entertainment industry and the annual telecast - the night America watches Broadway - is considered one of the most prestigious programs on television.
