If only it had sold...

Nice to see the Oliviers awarding art over commercialism to some extent. Just a shame it means diddly squat at the box office and for producers nationwide. I grow ever more convinced we'll never see Next To Normal on these shores.

SA will probably have a few youth group productions and then die out, alas. Schools won't do it...

Im convinced that if the National or commercial West End doesn't stage Next to Normal is will end up at the Donmar Warehouse within 3-4 years.

This isn't so different from when Sweeney Todd won the best musical award after it had closed.

When Denis Quilley collected the award then he predicted it would be back. And, in time, it was.

A big congrats to Spring Awakening on its four well deserved awards. Surprised that it didn't get lights - anyone know how Burnt looked?

Sorry for resurrecting this thread but I have to also pass on my congratulations to the SA team . Best Musical , Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor . Who would have thought ?

I stopped posting on this forum after the vile and poisonous responses to my support for this musical . I notice non of said vile and poisonous people have commented on this thread, possibly for not wanting to offend the "regulars". I however do notice that a year on the same vile and poisonous posts persist on the majority of other threads so I will say my piece and say adieu.

crombiestone - your last post concerns me, I hope vile and poisonous responses do not come from the West End Board? Out of all the boards I would like to think this one is the most accommodating and serene?

I agree with you there Phantom, we certainly speak our mind on this board, but I dont think anyone would actually question, or be nasty about someone's own personal opinion!

It would surprise me, considering how bad it did in London, (not a single week did it even meet running costs) and our set is now being used internationally, so we would have to build a new one, although, with it's recent olivier wins, and the fact it has a large youth fan base who it is harder for to get to London, I would never rule it out, however the fact Am Dram rights have just been released, make it even less likely!

That might be where it finds more popularity and longevity- youth groups and universities might well choose this show.

Deffinatley, I dont think we've seen the last of this show, I think it'll last forever as various colleges and groups etc. present different versions of this musical, I already know of 3 different groups looking into it!

We were just listening to the Broadway cast recording in the car and I was wondering if, especially after the exposure that Groff and Michele are getting in 'Glee', will it get another life sooner rather than later?

For what it's worth - I thought the London production, with its age appropriate cast, was far superior to the Broadway one.

The only fault with Spring Awakening was it was badly produced, to have two venues, the show lost complete momentum, it was poorly advertised, also the show had about 14 producers to please. If Bill Kenwright, Cameroon Mackintosh or Sonia Friedman took this project on, then Spring Awakening would have a whole new lease of life and prolonged.

With all the praise and awards heaped onto the show, I sort of wish I had enjoyed it. I tried, but it left me completely cold.

One of the most emotionally moving shows I've ever seen and also one of the most highly energised. The quality of the writing - both musically and textually - is simply stunning. The score still blows me away every time I listen to the CD. I saw it in New York, Hammersmith and twice at the Novello. And I would see it again in a heartbeat.

I still miss this show. It guts me that Dirty Dancing is still running and this closed so abruptly. So glad i got to see it on the stage before it died WELL DONE SPRING AWAKENING They should do a tour... even if it was just to the smaller theatres... surely the running costs aren't that huge for a show like this?

Its not really about running costs its about the fact that all a producer will see is that it could not find an audience in London long enough to keep it open for a few months....never mind on tour

You're spot on SADM2! However i think it was handled very poorly. A friend of mine was in the cast and i asked her why there was no tv slots etc and she said nobody wanted them. I think it would have been ideal for T4 etc and with the right team behind it it would have been a success. I firmly believe that it is a product of bad choices by too many producers!

After its initial failure in the West End, Blood Brothers came back primarily as a result of its success on tour (or that's my perception anyway).

So why couldn't this?

It's possible. There was a five year gap between those productions, though. And Blood Brothers ran six months in the West End originally, so I doubt it was quite the financial disaster that Spring Awakening must have been.
