Whatsonstage.com reports that the anticipated Tori Amos/Samuel Adamson musical recently received a workshop at the National Theatre, directed by MariAnne Elliott. The source material is 'The Light Princess' by George MacDonald, a fairy tale released in 1864. According to the site, "puppetry was one of the focal points of exploration." Puppetry is something Elliott is all too familiar with, having previously co-directed War Horse at the National in 2007.  Whatsonstage reports that the musical will see a world premiere at the Lyttelton Theatre in 2012.

Amos, who got her start playing at piano bars as a teenager, has enjoyed cult success since her major label debut in 1992, "Little Earthquakes," and sold over 15 million records worldwide, in spite of little mainstream radio airplay. She was featured as one of VH1's "100 Greatest Women in Rock n' Roll." A nine-time Grammy Award nominee, she has collaborated with artists including Trent Reznor, Michael Stipe, and Maynard James Keenan, and is famous for songs such as "Cornflake Girl," "Crucify", "Silent All These Years", and "Professional Widow." Samuel Adamson's plays include SOUTHWARK FAIR and a new version of Ibsen's PILLARS OF THE COMMUNITY, both presented by the National Theatre, CLOCKS AND WHISTLES - for which he won a Time Out Award - and DRINK, DANCE, LAUGH AND LIE both for the Bush Theatre and GRACE NOTE presented by the Peter Hall Company at the Old Vic. Adamson has also adapted THREE SISTERS and THE CHERRY ORCHARD for the Oxford Stage Company and Pedro Almodóvar's ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER for the Old Vic. His previous play, MRS AFFLECT, opened at the National Theatre in January 2009.
