Tighe's Medea/Medea Wins New Directions '09, Sow Runs 6/18- 7/18 At Gate Theater

Following the critically acclaimed, sell-out success of Chris Goode's ...Sisters, winner of the inaugural NEW DIRECTIONS award, Headlong Theatre and the Gate are proud to announce the winner of NEW DIRECTIONS 2009: Dylan Tighe and his remarkable reimagining of Euripides', Medea/Medea.

NEW DIRECTIONS encourages directorial innovation, bravery and flair and the four week run at the Gate represents a platform for a theatre maker to present their new interpretation and vision.

Medea exists as one of the primal myths of Western civilisation - the wronged everywoman, an archetype in extremism. Inspired by previous reworkings of the myth from Euripides to Von Trier, Dylan Tighe explores this essential narrative using Contemporary Stage technologies. In this multi-media performance, a small ensemble will deconstruct and remake the story, probing the nature of translation and liveness with wit, intelligence and imagination.

Actors and dancers, live and pre-recorded image and music, found texts and real objects, all combine in a piece which collides classic Greek tragedy with the forms and energies of modern performance art.

Dylan Tighe is a freelance performance artist, actor, writer, musician and director. Educated at Trinity College Dublin and Goldsmiths College London, his work explores new approaches to composition and form, fusing art forms to create a uniquely theatrical experience.

The cast includes Helen Schoene, Aine Stapleton and Raad Rawi.
