THE LION KING Breaks Box Office Records At The Lyceum Theater For 2009

The London production of Disney's award-winning musical The Lion King ended a remarkable 2009 by smashing two more box office records.
The Lion King grossed over £32 million at the box office in 2009, making it the highest- grossing year in the show's 10-year history, despite no increase in ticket prices last year. This breaks The Lion King'S previous 2008 record by more than £1.8 million.
During the week from 28 December to 3 January, The Lion King also broke its own box office record as well as the Lyceum Theatre's house record, grossing over £880,000 for the week. The show was seen by 18,757 people across 9 performances, with an average attendance of 101.2% (including standing room).
These box office records complete another remarkable year for the London production of The Lion King, which welcomed its 8 millionth guest and celebrated its 10th Anniversary in October; and in mid-December became the 9th longest-running musical in West End history.
Julie Taymor's internationally acclaimed stage adaptation of The Lion King is based on Disney's beloved animated feature film and follows the adventures of the lion cub Simba, as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destined role of King.
The London company of 46 performers is led by 11 principals: George Asprey as Scar, Shaun Escoffery as Mufasa, Stephen Matthews as Zazu, Brown Lindiwe Mkhize as Rafiki, Nick Mercer as Timon, Keith Bookman as Pumbaa, Andile Gumbi as Simba, Gloria Onitiri as Nala, Gary Forbes as Banzai, Allyson Addo as Shenzi and Mark Sangster as Ed.
