The Daily Mail reports that Sheffield Artistic Director Daniel Evans will be directing SHOW BOAT at the Crucible this winter.

The production runs December 10, 2015 to January 16, 2016.

The classic musical, featuring music by Jerome Kern and book & lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, is based on Edna Ferber's novel, which centers on the lives of performers, stagehands, and dock workers on the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River show boat, from 1887 to 1927.

SHOW BOAT premiered on Broadway in 1927; later revivals (in 1991 and 1995) won both a Tony Award and an Olivier Award for Best Revival of a Musical. The show also toured extensively after its Broadway debut.

The musical has been adapted several times for the big screen, including a silent film in 1929, Universal's fairly faithful version in 1936, and MGM's technicolor movie in 1951.
