Joe Hisaishi: Concerto for Orchestra brings composer and conductor Joe Hisaishi's newest orchestral work to Carnegie Hall, performed by the Orchestra of St. Luke's. Written in five movements and running approximately 45 minutes, the piece follows a form associated with composers such as Béla Bartók and Witold Lutosławski, placing the full orchestra at the center of expression. Hisaishi has described his aim as pursuing "the pure motion of sound," drawing on his experience conducting works by Bartók and Steve Reich. The Concerto for Orchestra is co-commissioned by an international consortium that includes Carnegie Hall, the National Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, and The Philadelphia Orchestra, among others.
