Molotov Theatre Group Sets 'Storyteller' Season

By:

Molotov Theatre Group, one of Washington DC's horror- and suspense-based theatre companies, is dubbing its 2015/2016 "The Season of the Storyteller." The company's three-show season includes "Lovecraft Nightmare Suite," "The Pillowman" and "Blood, Sweat & Fears: A Grand Guignol Sick Cabaret." The company's work this season will be featured in an upcoming academic textbook on the Grand Guignol French Theatre of Horror.

"This season looks at stories that make up the pantheon of past and current horror greats," said Molotov Founder and President Alex Zavistovich. "We hope to reach the broadest interests of horror fans, as well as Molotov's audience of traditional theatre-goers and Fringe enthusiasts."

This year, Molotov Theatre Group will be one of the case studies for the upcoming textbook "Grand Guignolesque" (to be published by University of Exeter Press in 2017). Professor Richard Hand, the author of three authorititative textbooks on the Grand Guignol theatrical movement, will be looking at how the style is being preserved by theatre companies around the world today.

Molotov's 2015/2016 season is:

  • "Lovecraft Nightmare Suite" by Daniel Spurgeon - (October 15-November 7, 2015) A tribute to the godfather of modern horror, LOVECRAFT: NIGHTMARE SUITE presents a theatrical experience taken directly from H.P. Lovecraft's stories, essays and poetry. Six strange tales of monsters, madmen and mayhem are brought to life, directed by Jay D. Brock (director of Molotov's Helen Hayes Recommended show "Normal").
  • "The Pillowman" by Martin McDonagh - (March 31- April 24, 2016) In a nameless totalitarian state, a writer is interrogated about murders that mimic ideas in his stories. The writer's brother is used as a pawn, and dark secrets are revealed about the childhood of the two men. A modern horror favorite by the author of "The Cripple of Inishmaan."
  • "Blood, Sweat & Fears: A Grand Guignol Sick Cabaret," translated by Richard Hand and Michael Wilson (July 7 - July 31, 2016): Molotov's full-length 2008 debut remounted. Three classic Grand Guignol stories brought to the stage, guided by the lascivious mistress of ceremonies Bella Donna. Murder, sexual farce, mutilation and revenge make up a cozy evening of horror from the turn of the last century.

About Molotov Theatre Group

Molotov Theatre Group applies the Grand Guignol ideals to contemporary and classic works. They also produce English translations of original Grand Guignol scripts to preserve and draw attention to this important, and essentially forgotten genre.
