McLean Community Players to Stage JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, 7/10-26

By:

The McLean Community Players' production of Jesus Christ Superstar opens July 10 at the Alden Theatre in the McLean Community Center. MCP's production runs weekends, July 10-26, 2015, with evening performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m.

Jesus Christ Superstar was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice and is considered one of the greatest rock operas ever created. It contains some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most memorable music. The original Broadway production opened in 1971 and was nominated for several Tony Awards. The London production opened in 1972 and ran for more than 3,000 performances. The show went on to become an international phenomenon.

Jesus Christ Superstar is based on the accounts in the Gospels of the final days of Jesus of Nazareth, from his arrival in Jerusalem until his crucifixion. A large part of the plot focuses on the character of Judas Iscariot. Although the setting and style of the show are contemporary, it is faithful to the biblical accounts of the events. Co-directors Kevin and Pamela McCormack lead an award-winning cast and crew in bringing Jesus Christ Superstar to the Alden stage.

Director Kevin McCormack says "Pam and I are very excited about working on this production of Jesus Christ Superstar, especially since it has been exactly 30 years since we first put this show together in Carson, California. Like that first production, we have an excellent cast, staff, design team and musicians all working very hard to help us

create a story both new and familiar, current and timeless. We enjoy what the show stands for. It sometimes questions standard beliefs but is respectful of them. This show can have a contemporary setting, which is not possible for many musicals, and that allowed for some nontraditional and alternative-gender casting. And being able to present this rock-style opera at the technically-advanced Alden Theatre makes this even more of a treat!"

Jesus Christ Superstar opens July 10, 2015, at the McLean Community Center's Alden Theatre, 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean, Virginia. Tickets are $23 or $25 with group rates available. For more information, call 703.790.9223. Complete show information is available at www.McLeanPlayers.org. Jesus Christ Superstar is presented through an exclusive arrangement with R&H Theatricals and Two Knights Rights Limited (www.rnh.com).

Through a cooperative agreement with The Metropolitan Washington Ear, along with the support of the Alden Theatre, audio description services for individuals with vision challenges will be offered at the 8:00 p.m. performance on July 25.
