Video: GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS Star Indira Varma Talks 'Plays That Made Me' at Old Vic
The Olivier winner picks five scripts before heading to the stage as Levene.
The Old Vic shared a new installment of its 'Plays That Made Me' series featuring Indira Varma, who stopped by the Script Library in the theatre's Backstage Cafe & Bar before heading to the main stage to appear as Levene in GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. The video, titled "Indira Varma on why it's so wonderful to be 'horrible'", finds Varma pulling five scripts from the shelves and discussing what drew her to each one.
Varma's selections span a wide range of genres and eras, moving through Celebration, The Dance of Death, Macbeth, The Seagull and Faith Healer. According to the video description, the common thread across her picks is fascinating characters written by brilliant writers, a theme that connects directly to her current role as Levene in David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama.
GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS is currently running at The Old Vic in an all-female production directed by Tony Award winner Patrick Marber, with Rosa Salazar starring opposite Varma as Roma. The production reimagines Mamet's story of cutthroat real estate salesmen with a cast that also includes Mercedes Bahleda, Nancy Crane, Dorothea Myer-Bennett, Florence Odumosu and Niky Wardle.
The Script Library visit offers a glimpse into Varma's own reading habits and the works she considers formative, tying her personal taste in drama to the characters she brings to life on stage.
