A stunning exhibition comes to the Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater as Artist Eric Nelson presents sculpture and photography concurrently within the space.

365: An Idea and the Reality began as a project to make one sculpture a day for a year. Each sculpture is carved from a 2x2x4 inch block of mahogany, and is mounted on a small shelf attached to the wall. "I am attempting to find a way to relate small objects and a large space using repetition, variation, and the movement of the viewer to achieve the connection," explains Nelson.

Three Years Passing is a photography project involving the artist's observations of pattern in the man-made and natural world. "Most of what we observe in the world comes in quantities or repeated units, often with layers and subtle variations. For me, it is the variations that are most interesting."

Eric Nelson is a Middlebury, Vermont based artist who holds an MFA from the University of Iowa. He currently teaches sculpture and drawing at Middlebury College. Recent exhibitions of his sculpture have been installed in public sculpture parks at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia; Navy Pier in Chicago; and the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Nelson has been a visiting artist at the Edinburgh College of Art in Edinburgh, Scotland; the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut; and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont. He has been awarded residency fellowships at Moulin a Nef in Auvillar, France; the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Sweet Briar, Virginia; and Sculpture Space, Inc., in Utica, New York. He has received two fellowships from the Vermont Council on the Arts and the Albert Jacobson Memorial Award at the Silvermine Guild Arts Center in New Canaan, Connecticut.
The exhibition will be on display at The Jackson Gallery on the lower level of Town Hall Theater in Middlebury from October 1 through November 7, Monday - Saturday from noon to 5:00 pm, and during theater events. An opening reception with the artist will take place during the Arts Walk on Friday, October 8 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Refreshments and a cash bar will be available.
