DIRTY BLONDE to Play Town Hall Theater, 7/18-20
"I made myself platinum, but I was born a dirty blonde." The humor, the kernel of truth, the double entendre - this could only be a quip from the legendary Mae West.
Dirty Blonde explores the phenomenon of the Mae West, one of America's most enduring and controversial pop culture icons. Best Play nominee for 2000, the musical drama features songs from West's films, including She Done Him Wrong and I'm No Angel. It comes to Middlebury's Town Hall Theater for 4 performances, July 18-20.
Dirty Blonde frames West's self-willed rise to glory through the perspective of two contemporary admirers. Jo and Charley, both lonely and obsessive West fans, meet at her grave and form a unique relationship based on the woman they worship. The play alternates from the present to flashbacks of West's music and her racy repartee.
When it was first staged, Ben Brantley of the New York Times called Dirty Blonde "hands down the best new American play of the season."
Dirty Blonde is a production of the Pendragon Theater, which has been entertaining audiences in Saranac Lake, New York, for 15 years. BRandy Clark plays the double role of West and the present-day Jo. Dylan Duffy and Matthew C. Eck play a large variety of roles as the men in both of these women's lives.
Dirty Blonde is the third production in the MiddSummer Nights Theater Festival at Town Hall Theater. It can be seen on Thursday, July 18 at 8 pm; Friday July 19 at 8 pm; and Saturday, July 20 at 2 pm and 8 pm. Tickets are $20, and may be purchased at 802 382-9222, www.townhalltheater.org, at the THT Box Office (Sun-Mon, Noon - 5 pm) or at the door.
