State of Emergency Presents LOVE&SEX AKA PER-MISSION Tonight

By:

A hard-hitting new dance theatre show from State of Emergency will be appearing at Exeter Northcott Theatre in February. Boldly exploring themes of love, sex and consent, Love&Sex examines the emotions, pressures and comedy of sexual relationships through dance and music.

Exposing myths and challenging preconceptions, Love&Sex has been created to entertain and inform without judgement. Sexuality, peer pressure, emotions and the influences of social media are all in the mix and the show has been developed in partnership with Brook (The UK's leading provider of sexual health services and advice for young people under 25), Z Arts, Manchester, The Station, Bristol and the University of Durham.

Love&Sex is a collaboration between State of Emergency choreographers Colin Poole and Alesandra Seutin, and Grammy-nominated composer Steve Marshall.

Colin Poole's distinctive work is known to be uncompromising yet he's also able to tackle highly charged issues with thoughtfulness and sensitivity. Colin is an independent choreographer and dancer. He danced with Phoenix and Rambert Dance before embarking on a choreographic career that includes residencies at The Place, Royal Opera House and Greenwich Dance Agency. He has been twice nominated for the Jerwood Award and was a Place Prize semi-finalist. Colin also works in dance and higher education and has most recently created works for the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Laban's post-graduate company Transitions and graduates of The Place.

Alesandra Seutin is renowned for her distinctively theatrical choreographic and movement vocabulary combining physical theatre, innovative scenography, text and dance. Seutin's repertoire of work is focused on the exploration of subjects which influence our society, and with this captures her audience in a journey of compelling and outspoken dance theatre. Her company, Vocab Dance made its name by nurturing young talent and presenting strong dance works in a variety of settings. Alesandra Seutin is the first and only UK dance artist to have been selected by icon Germaine Acogny the Mother of African Contemporary Dance, to be part of the transmission of her technique.

Musical Director Steve Marshall is a singer and instrumentalist who co-founded State of Emergency with Deborah Baddoo in 1986. He brings to the production a wide range of musical influences including reggae, soul/RnB, rock, jazz, funk, Afro-beat, country, hip-hop, blues, dance and electronica. As a producer, his work with the likes of Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Keith Richards and George Clinton earned him Grammy nominations in 2008 and 2011.

The show tours with a specially devised workshops programme, plus 'Youth Ambassadors' which are young people specially trained in dance and the issues raised to engage the audiences with after show talks.

BBC called State of Emergency "A fusion of movement that captures all the freshness and daring of Black British dance".

Tickets are £13.50 (concs: £2 off). Schools pay £8.50 for groups 10+; the show is for ages 13 years and older. Student standby tickets are £8. Groups of ten and up get their 11th ticket free. Running Time: 1hr 20mins. There will be a post show discussion on Wednesday, 19 February. For more information on State of Emergency, please visit www.stateofemergencyltd.com.
