SoHo Playhouse Presents BABA BRINKMAN'S RAP GUIDE TO CONSCIOUSNESS
Baba Brinkman is a pioneer of a whole new species of theatre, bringing the excitement of a rap concert together with the wit of a stand-up comic and the mind-expansion of a TED Talk. Called "astonishing and brilliant" by the New York Times, Baba Brinkman's "Rap Guide" series of science-themed hip-hop theatre shows have thrilled audiences around the world since 2009, when The Rap Guide to Evolution won a Scotsman Fringe First Award in Edinburgh and went on to run off-Broadway and play at the Sydney Opera House and other major venues as part of a world tour. The Rap Guide to Religion was an NY Times Critics' Pick and received a 2015 Drama Desk Award Nomination for "Unique Theatrical Experience", and The Rap Guide to Climate Chaos recently completed a five-month critically-acclaimed off-Broadway run in New York.
In his latest "peer-reviewed rap" production, the research frontiers of neuroscience find a high-energy outlet in Rap Guide to Consciousness. Brinkman has teamed up with Professor Anil Seth, Co-Director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science at the University of Sussex, to explore the latest findings from the neuroscience and cognitive psychology of subjective experience.
What is it like to be a baby? We might have to take LSD to find out. What is it like to be an octopus? Imagine most of your brain was actually built into your fingertips. What is it like to be a rapper kicking some of the world's most complex lyrics for amused fringe audiences? Surreal.
Zombies, locked-in patients, wannabe celebs, Google AIs, and Baba's infant son all make an appearance in Rap Guide to Consciousness, as he brings his signature mix of rap comedy storytelling to the how and why behind your thoughts, feelings, perceptions and desires.
Mixing cutting-edge scientific research with projected visuals, crowd interaction, characters, comedy, and virtuoso rap storytelling, Baba takes you through the twists and turns of the only organ it's better to donate than receive: the human brain.
