Monty Python rightfully hold a place amongst the world's finest ever comedians, influencing a generation and revolutionising comedy on their way to greatness. There was huge demand for tickets for the first live performances at the O2 on stage by the stars of Monty Python since performing at the Hollywood Bowl on 15 September 1980 and 40 years after they last appeared on stage in the UK at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. At a combined age of just 357, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin will once again take to the stage and perform some of Monty Python's greatest hits with modern, topical, Pythonesque twists.
In a recent interview with The Telegraph, John Cleese said about the £4.5m production: "The opening number is quite energetic. We leap around and it sets the standard. I'm quite worn out after the first number. We've got Mick Jagger as an example and we can still move fast around the stage..." Tickets at a fraction of the 02 arena prices can now be purchased online or by telephone.
Monty Python's Flying Circus was a British television comedy sketch show conceived, written and performed by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin that was broadcast by the BBC from 1969 to 1974. Awash with satire, extreme silliness and brilliant comedy, the Python phenomenon developed from the television series into something larger in scope and impact, spawning touring stage shows in the UK and abroad, films, numerous albums, several books and a stage musical (Spamalot!) as well as launching the members to individual stardom.
Loosely structured as a sketch show, but with an innovative, stream-of-consciousness approach (aided by Gilliam's animation), the Pythons legendarily pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in style and content and their lasting influence on British comedy was, and remains, unprecedented - Not The Nine O'Clock News and all its spin-offs, The Young Ones, Little Britain and more; in America the runaway success of what was an entirely original approach to comedy helped develop the work of cult performers from the early editions of Saturday Night Live onwards.
