As previously announced on the 2010 New Years' Honours List, Nicholas Hytner, artistic director of London's National Theatre, was made a knight bachelor yesterday, June 2, by Queen Elizabeth II.

Hytner's directorial achievements include Alan Bennett's THE HISTORY BOYS and Rodgers and Hammerstein's CAROUSEL, both of which he won Tony Awards for, as well as MISS SAIGON and numerous productions of Shakespeare's works.  He has also directed several films, including adaptations 'The Crucible,' 'Twelfth Night,'  and 'The History Boys.'  In addition, Hytner is a sucessful opera director.  He has been the National Theatre's artistic director since 2003. 

Other performing arts personalities who were honored yesterday include actor Patrick Stewart, opera singer Sarah Patricia Connolly, pianist Peter Donohue, director Phyllida Lloyd, and actress Margaret Maud Tyzack.
