Pipeline Theatre to Bring STREAMING to Pleasance Islington, Nov 11-29

Pipeline Theatre presents STREAMING. The world of web-camming is explored in a depiction of one teenager's initiation into the sex industry, written and directed by Jon Welch. The production will play Pleasance Islington, 11th - 29th November 2014 with a press performance slated for 8pm Thursday 13th November at Pleasance Islington (StageSpace).

The intertwining stories of three people in turmoil create a cutting portrait of contemporary life, sexual objectification and paternal failure in this new show from Cornwall based company Pipeline Theatre. Rosa is 15. After the death of her mother and the breakdown of her father, she seeks solace in the friendship of her reclusive new neighbour, whose home-grown business earns her £3.50 a minute, 20 times a night. With evocative sound design, a shape-shifting set, projection and puppetry, Streaming is a rites of passage story for a modern age where walls become veils and private becomes public.

Privately educated and privileged, Rosa and her father struggle to adjust to new surroundings after the finances of the family unravel. In their boxy new flat on the far edges of London they meet next door neighbour Candy, who fascinates and intrigues both father and daughter. While the alienation between them begins to take root, Rosa seeks refuge in this new friendship while her father's delusional attempts to salvage their former lifestyle leave her desperate to seek a resolution to the family's problems. When Candy's illness offers a way in to the webcam industry for the first time, Rosa's life changes forever.

Director and writer Jon Welch said, "Robin Williams said something like: 'Men have brains and dicks. They just don't have enough blood to operate both simultaneously'. Any man will tell you this is true, me included. The upshot of this is an age-old sliding scale of sexual objectification of women when men's brains are bloodless. To see someone as an object involves removing their humanity. All women endure this process, some rise above it, some make money out of it. But, with the internet, it's becoming an unspoken epidemic, it's fingers stretching towards an ever younger nest of online porn hatchlings. A new de-humanised normal. Despite being a man, maybe because of it, I wanted to write something that shows the cost of this. Using my brain."

Pipeline Theatre is a company based in Cornwall, who aim to create text-based drama with high end design values. They seek to provide a platform for gifted young actors to perform alongside seasoned professionals. Streaming is the second performance from the company, whose debut production Transports received acclaim following runs in both Cornwall and the Tristan Bates theatre in London.
