BLACK TOFFEE in association with HARROGate Theatre presents HIDDEN, written and performed by Laura Lindsay and Peter Carruthers, for a SPRING 2014 TOUR & LONDON RUN from 28th Jan - 23 May. London Press Nights - April 8 7pm or April 9 9pm.
The urban jungle. Six people, six ordinary lives and one thing in common. Everyone has something to hide, something they would prefer others not to know, some tiny piece of shame, something tucked away for the sake of appearance, something ... hidden. But all lives cross and interweave, we pass in the night, meet eyes on a crowded train, click on a computer screen ... we present ourselves to the world... we connect.
Hidden delves into the lives of six young people living in the city sprawl. It reveals an intriguing puzzle of how their paths interweave and unravel in a modern urban world. Exploring themes of constructed identities, connected lives and the need for secrecy versus the search for intimacy, Hidden is an insightful and darkly witty study of modern manners.
Laura Lindsay and Peter Carruthers' debut play, in which they also perform, embarks on a national tour and London run following its critically acclaimed sell-out run at Underbelly in Edinburgh last August as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Black Toffee was formed by Laura Lindsay in 2011 with the aim of producing high quality theatre and film which reflect modern society and challenge perspectives. Laura and Peter Carruthers met during training at Arden School of Theatre in Manchester, where they discovered a mutual love of new writing, an interest in human psychology and a shared dark sense of humour. The pair has since collaborated on two short films as well as Hidden. One of which, Fall Out (which follows a veteran suffering with PTSD) has been commended by Sir Patrick Stewart as 'extremely powerful' and won Best Short Film at GI Film Festival in Washington .
Laura Lindsay was recently nominated for 'Best Actress' in the Buxton Fringe Awards for her performance in In a Land Much Like Ours. She has worked with Fringe First winners Look Left Look Right on their sell-out shows You Once Said Yes and Above and Beyond. Her other theatre credits include performances at The Lowry, The Royal Exchange and 24:7 Theatre Festival. Her screen credits include Prisoners' Wives and Emmerdale.
Peter Carruthers runs a film company Peter Carruthers Films, under which he has written, produced and starred in 3 short films: Fall Out, Never Forget and Civvy Street. Never Forget was selected for a feature length collection of short films called 50 Kisses which is due for national release in February this year. Civvy Street was commissioned by the NHS and he has further commissions in 2014 to raise awareness of mental health issues. His theatre credits include performances at The Lowry and regional tours of the North West.
Hidden is a co-production with HarroGate Theatre under their associate artists scheme. The play text is published by Playdead Press.
