Finborough Theatre Presents IN THEIR PLACE, March-June 2011

"In Their Place" is a three month season dedicated entirely to the voice of the female playwright. Running from March to June 2011 at the multi-award winning Finborough Theatre, the season celebrates the work of four inspirational women.

The three four-week runs are all by established female playwrights/composer, with each production exemplifying the three different strands of our artistic policy - rediscovered plays, music theatre and new writing - with a rediscovery by Caryl Churchill, the UK premiere of a musical with music by composer Polly Pen, and a world premiere of a new play by Naomi Wallace.

The three Sunday/Monday slots in the season are entirely devoted to introducing the UK to the work of one writer - multi-award-winning Canadian playwright, and our latest Playwright-in-Residence, Colleen Murphy - with a European premiere, a UK premiere and a world premiere of her work. This mini-season within a season marks Colleen's UK debut.

Like our previous season, the RediscoveriesUK season, all but one of the productions are also directed by emerging female directors. During the season, too, the Finborough Theatre Literary Department under Literary Manager Van Badham will be developing new work by emerging female playwrights which will be seen later in the year in our annual "Vibrant - A Festival of Finborough Playwrights" - our boiler room of the best international new writing. Three of the new plays in this season have already received a staged reading as part of Vibrant festivals. As always, our Literary Department will be developing new writers, not just young writers.

The season opens on 1 March with the first professional production in 27 years, and the first since the original Out of Joint production in 1983, of Fen by Caryl Churchill. Directed by Ria Parry, the second winner of the Leverhulme Bursary for Emerging Theatre Directors, a partnership between the National Theatre Studio and the Finborough Theatre, Fen plays from 1 March-26 March 2011.
The second production in the season is the UK premiere of the acclaimed Off-Broadway musical, Bed and Sofa with music by Polly Pen, and lyrics by Laurence Klavan. Acclaimed young music theatre director Luke Sheppard directs. Bed and Sofa plays 29 March- 23 April 2011.

Following the run of Bed and Sofa, the Finborough Theatre will be closed for two weeks for a long-overdue refurbishment of the backstage areas and to install air conditioning.

The season then culminates with the world premiere of a new play, And I And Silence by internationally acclaimed playwright Naomi Wallace - whose very first play was produced at the Finborough Theatre in 1993. Winner of the Buzz Goodbody Best Director Award Caitlin McLeod directs. And I And Silence plays from 10 May-4 June 2011.

The three Sunday/Monday slots in the season are entirely devoted to introducing the UK to the work of one writer -multi-award-winning Canadian playwright, and our latest Playwright-in-Residence, Colleen Murphy - with a European premiere (The December Man/L'homme de décembre playing on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 March 2011), a UK premiere (Beating Heart Cadaver playing on 3, 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18 April 2011) and a world premiere of her work (The Goodnight Bird, playing on 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30 May 2011). This mini-season within a season marks Colleen's UK debut.
Our newly refurbished bar opened very successfully in November 2010. Now known as The Finborough Wine Café (a unique combination of Café, Wine Bar and Wine Shop), and under entirely new management, the Wine Café is already a huge success with our regulars and the locals, and looks forward to welcoming theatre patrons.

In the West End, you can see a transfer of the 2008 UK premiere production of Ordinary Days - a new musical by award-winning composer/lyricist Adam Gwon, starring Julie Atherton, Daniel Boys, Alexia Khadime and Lee William-Davis, and directed by Adam Lenson, from 8 February to 5 March at Trafalgar Studios.
