Autumn,1916. A young man arrives at a remote Sussex farm seeking a secret - the forgotten music of rural England, and a glimpse of a lost Arcadia. He finds instead a quiet struggle for life and love that echoes the timeless stories of the very songs he is seeking.

Flowers of the Field is a dark romance that explores the cultural and political impulses behind the movement to rediscover England's lost folk music, at a time of war and growing industrialisation.

Kevin Mandry is a freelance writer whose theatrical productions and commissions include The Tricycle Theatre, Bristol Old Vic, Orange Tree, Young Exchange, Churchill and Birds Nest Theatres and BBC R4.

Directed by David Cottis whose many credits at the White Bear include It's All True (Time out Critics' Choice) and the award-winning Silent Partners.

Cast

Hilary Burns

"Hilary Burns appears as a vengeful yet wise ghost... Playful as well as caring and very much alive..." Edward Lukes, London Magazine reviewing The Memory of Water.

Mac Elsey
"Richard Aloi....and Mac Elsey, as the insightful homeless man John, are the standout performances...." The Stage on Steven Hevey's Pay as you Go.

Ian Mairs
who previously performed in It's All True, also at the White Bear ««««« What's On Stage
«««« Timeout, Critics Choice & one of the top 5 plays on in London and «««« One Stop Arts
'Blitzstein's much-written-about mourning of his late wife was beautifully underplayed by Ian Mairs' Heather Deacon, 20th August 2012

Isabella Marshall
"Isabella Marshall as Chris enchants as she falls in love all over again..." WHAT'S ON STAGE (Dancing at Lughnasa Theatre by the Lake)

Josh Taylor

"Josh Taylor's portrayal of the character is sensational." Coward 2013 West End Wilma

__________

"a deceptively simple play that packs a huge emotional punch. It's understated in the same way that Chekhov's plays are understated, with full rounded characters, wonderful dialogue that never strays out of period, and real dramatic life...with its echoes of lives wasted and destroyed far away from the centre of historical events, is an absolute gem." London theatre reviews / John Morrison
