The Dominion Theatre received the award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Carbon Reduction at the inaugural Camden Business Awards which took place at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel last Thursday. Hosted by Sky News Business Correspondent, Joel Hills, the awards celebrated the vital contribution and positive impact the 25,000 businesses in Camden make to the borough, economically, environmentally and to the community.

With a seating capacity of 2069, and as the residency of We Will Rock You, the Dominion Theatre is one of the largest and busiest theatres in the West End. By taking advantage of their recent refurbishments and capital works projects they have installed state of the art toilet facilities, LED lighting and high efficient heating and cooling systems, resulting in huge reductions in water consumption and large energy savings which saw the theatre save 100 tonnes of carbon in 2012.

On receiving the award, the theatre's General Manager, David Pearson said "Our commitment to the environment is something that we as a business feel passionate about and work hard in achieving. We are thrilled that this has been recognised by the Camden Business Awards. The Restoration Levy we charge on each ticket allows us to invest even more in our beautiful building, restoring features, renovating and improving our green credentials. "

Since 2005, the Dominion Theatre has had an environmental policy which guides their attitude to waste, use of resources and the awareness of their impact on the wider community. The venue's 'Green Team' is a group of staff from across many departments who work together to focus on improving the theatre's environmental performance.

2014 will see the installation of the first retro-fit large scale heating and cooling recovery system to a West End Theatre, effectively linking the plenum intake and extract system together thereby enabling the recirculation of the already pre-heated or cooled auditorium air as opposed to discharging it directly to the environment. This major project along with the theatre's ongoing installation of ultra low nitrous-oxide boilers and a brand new chiller system will all be centrally controlled and monitored by a building management system to ensure optimum performance and efficiency. These plant upgrades will dramatically reduce their energy demands.

Improving air quality is firmly embedded within the Dominion's Environmental Policy, and to demonstrate commitment to such improvements they have joined forces with CleanerAir in London and is a member of the Camden Climate Change Alliance.

The Dominion Theatre holds a Silver Green Tourism Award which is proudly displayed in the main foyer and is striving towards the Gold Award and hope that the heat recovery system and new boilers will assist them in this aim.
