Dominion Theatre serves up a West End Summer Tea Party For Freddie For A Day with a rare chance to view Freddie Mercury's personal stamp collection on Monday, September 5. Freddie For A Day. In aid of the Mercury Phoenix Trust

With seemingly every other day a new celebrity popping up in pictures dressed like him and with luxury brands like Lotus and watchmakers Raymond Weil creating one-off special editions to mark the day, and with the expectation that come early September we should expect to suddenly be faced with a nation of moustaches, it would be hard to ignore the fact know that this September 5, on his 65th birth date, the country will turn Freddie For A Day: Freddie Mercury that it, the famous, multifarious, and much missed lead singer of Queen.

In the UK and across the world thousands of fans will do something ‘Freddie' for a day to mark what would have been his 65th birthday. In doing so they will be raising money for the HIV AIDS charity bearing his name, the Mercury Phoenix Trust, which to date has already given $15 million to fighting the the cause worldwide.

Adding to the fun of the day, London's Dominion Theatre, home of the run-away hit musical musical Will Rock You based on Freddie and his fellow Queen band mates' songs ,is joining in by recreating for the day a famous Freddie's birthday - his 40th birthday in 1986 when Freddie threw a Summer GArden Party and welcomed close friends to the lawns of his Kensington & Chelsea lodge house, all of whom had been previously told to ‘wear a hat'.

For the Dominion restaging, hats are not being insisted on, but will no doubt make an appearance or two and add to the colour of the occasion as the theatre opens its doors that Monday 5th between 12pm and 5pm to a foyer found laid out in gArden Party furniture and serving on sale the expected teas, coffees, and ‘deliciously home baked cakes'. Fans can sup while watching footage of Freddie on a specially installed video wall, or while visiting a memorabilia gallery on show in the circle foyer which from this day will include a rare chance to view Freddie's personal childhood stamp collection, in a display by The British Postal Museum & Archive. The stamp album will be on show for 1 month and is one of few of Freddie's personal items that still exist in the public domain.

Who would have thought that the young Freddie, while dreaming of life in England and a glamorous career in fashion or pop, would have passed his time meticulously collating stamps from around the world?

The Freddie Summer Tea Party, September 5, Dominion Theatre, Tottenham Court Road, London. W 1. (Tottenham Court Road tube station). 12midday - 5pm. Hats welcome. All proceeds to the Mercury Phoenix Trust.

That Monday night September 5 performance of We Will Rock You, 7.30pm, is likely to echo the spirit of Freddie with expectations that many of the audience are likely to turn up in some form of Freddie gear or just a moustache. For anyone who might have shaved before leaving home that night, there will be plenty of stick-on ‘taches on sale at the theatre concession counter that evening.
