Cast Announced for Philip Ridley's KARAGULA at Secret London Venue

By:

The world premiere of Philip Ridley's KARAGULA is one of the largest productions ever staged Off-West End. PIGDOG's experimental and formally playful work aims to help transform how the industry interprets accessibility, equality and gender politics. With this in mind, Karagula has been cast with true diversity -- in terms of age, gender, race and ability.

Performances will run at a secret location in London from Friday 10th June to Saturday 9th July, 7.15pm. Press Night is Wednesday 15th June, 7.15pm.

Producer Ramin Sabi comments, "It's wonderful to have a production that can truly defy expectations of what theatre is. Being set in a parallel world means we can break all conventions; by searching purely for talent, we have a majority female, majority non-white cast of varied physical abilities. All these people play a mammoth set of varied characters not specific to what their look or ability might usually confine them to."

THE CAST ARE:

Obi Abili (Dido, Queen of Carthage (National Theatre), Angels in America (Headlong), Antigone (Barbican, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Kennedy Center));

Tony Bell (Damned United (West Yorkshire Playhouse/Derby Theatre); Shakespeare in Love (West End); 39 Steps (UK tour));

Emily Burnett (Beacons (Park Theatre), First Love is the Revolution (Soho Theatre), It's My Shout (BBC Wales));

Lynette Clarke (Sense of an Ending (Theatre503), BoiBoi is Dead (WYP and Watford Palace), The Crucible (WYP));

Emily Forbes (Doctors (BBC), The Great Fire (ITV), Motherland (workshop, Salisbury Playhouse)); Lanre Malaolu (The Jew Of Malta (RSC), The Internet is Serious Business (Royal Court), Macbeth (Globe));

Caroline Parker (The Amazing Tale of Oliver Twist (Red Earth Productions), Edmund The Learned Pig (Manchester Royal Exchange), If I Don't Lose, I'll Lose (BSLBT Zone));

Theo Solomon (The American Clock (NT Studio), The Minotaur and My Father Odysseus (Unicorn Theatre)) and;

Charmaine Wombwell (Scarlet Shambles: It Used to be Me (Edinburgh Fringe), Grounded (Deafinitely Theatre) and Champion of the World (BSLBT Zone)).

KARAGULA is a production of epic proportions, pushing the boundaries of British Theatre with its adventurous and daring nature. Written in fractured timescale, KARAGULA explores our constant need to find meaning. To believe we're here for a reason. To have faith in something. Faith in anything.

Taking place in a secret location, Olivier and OFFIE award-winning DEM Productions, emerging company PIGDOG, and Soho Theatre are uniting to offer a unique theatre experience, bringing this extraordinary, form-shattering play to life. Ridley's Karagula is a sweeping fantasy epic -- set entirely in an alternative universe -- that chimes chillingly with events in the world today.

KARAGULA will have a captioned performance for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, the date of which will be confirmed shortly.
