Belgrade Theatre Announces Successful Applicant to Young Director Scheme

By:

The Belgrade Theatre is one of just five theatre companies across England to join up with the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme (RTYDS) to offer training opportunities and nurture new talent within the industry. RTYDS is the country's longest running and most influential training scheme for young directors, and has helped launch the careers of Ken Loach, John Tiffany, Vicky Featherstone and Rupert Goold amongst others.

Local Director, Corey Campbell will be joining the Belgrade Theatre and Tamasha on a three month placement where he will work alongside experienced theatre professionals gaining an invaluable insight into the work of a theatre director and developing his own career opportunities at the same time.

Corey graduated from Birmingham School of Acting in 2013 and later founded the Midlands based theatre company, Strictly Arts alongside fellow graduate Reaya Sealey. The company are part of the Belgrade Theatre's Springboard initiative set up to support early stage artists and companies to develop to the next chapter of their careers. In 2015, Corey co-directed and starred in new play, Green Leaves Fall at the Belgrade Theatre which was later revived in 2016 which played in B2 alongside physical theatre piece, Freeman.

During his three month placement at the Belgrade Theatre, Corey will have the exciting opportunity to work with Director Katie Posner, assisting her on Made in India, a new co-production with Tamasha in association with Pilot Theatre. It tells the story of Eva whose trip to a surrogacy clinic in Gujurat is her last hope of becoming a mother. For village girl Aditi, surrogacy is a lifeline out of poverty. Written by Satinder Chohan, Made in India is a thrilling new play about motherhood and blood ties between women in a brave new world. The play will run in the Belgrade's B2 auditorium from Tues 24 Jan to Sat 4 Feb 2017.

Corey said, "I am delighted to be working with Katie Posner on this fantastic new play through the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme. It's an invaluable opportunity to gain hands on experience and to continue my professional development as a new theatre director. I can't wait to start rehearsals in January."

The Belgrade's Associate Director, Justine Themen said, "we are extremely excited to be involved with the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme again, after running an Introduction to Directing course last year. The Belgrade prides itself on developing emerging talent in our industry and we're committed to engaging with people from under represented communities. Since working with Corey through our Springboard initiative we know how much potential he has and are really proud to be involved in his development as a director."

The Belgrade Theatre is committed to providing training opportunities through its broad-reaching Community & Education programme. Its award-winning apprenticeship scheme offers full time positions across various departments of the theatre as well as nurturing home-grown talent through its Springboard initiative launched in 2015.

Sue Emmas, RTYDS Artistic Director said "through Introduction to Directing and three month placements, RTYDS creates pathways for talented directors from under-represented backgrounds to learn their craft, build networks and take the first step towards a career as a professional theatre director. Directors should reflect of the diversity of our towns and cities and RTYDS is working towards making this a reality."

Tickets for Made in India are available now priced from just £10.50. Book now by calling the Belgrade Theatre Box Office team on 024 7655 3055 or visit www.belgrade.co.uk where tickets are even cheaper.
