Action To The Word's A CLOCKWORK ORANGE Comes Home to Hove, Sept 20-22

A Clockwork Orange, written in Hove by Anthony Burgess in 1962, is being performed in its home town this September, direct from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of this classic satirical novel.

The Old Market presents Action to the Word’s theatre production A Clockwork Orange, led by Company Director Alexandra Spencer-Jones. Action To The Word is currently touring this award winning all-male A Clockwork Orange show.

After a sell-out Edinburgh run in 2011, Action To The Word took A Clockwork Orange to this year's Latitude Festival, receiving excellent reviews. Throughout August the show will run at Pleasance for the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

This September, TOM - The Old Market provides the ideal venue for the production, located as it is in Hove, East Sussex, which was home to Anthony Burgess at the time of writing his controversial dystopian novella.

Get dragged into the glorious glass-edged nastiness of Manchester’s underworld. A playtime of orgiastic ultraviolence and sexuality, this is the story of little Alex and his Droogs in their battle against the tedium of adolescence. An unapologetic jubilation of the human condition, ‘Action To The Word’ tear their way through this physical theatre horrorshow retelling of Burgess’ infamous literary masterpiece.

On his return to England, and no doubt intensified by his move to the southeast, Burgess was shocked and intrigued by the rise of youth gang-culture, and the accompanying language that had developed within and around it. Burgess was particularly fascinated by the vicious conflict between Mods and Rockers that was rampant along the south coast at this time, and was keen to explore this rivalry within his dystopian novella.

Burgess determined to weave his interest in the nuances of language through the novel, but he began to lose conviction in its longevity; concerned that any semantic workings would ultimately serve to date his work. It was during a trip to Russia in 1961 that Burgess found the inspiration and linguistic direction he had been searching for. Following this trip, he formed the hybrid language nadsat, and his timeless classic found its voice. A Clockwork Orange was published the following year in 1962.

A Clockwork Orange features on the Modern Library’s list of 100 novels, and was voted by Time magazine as one of the 100 best English language novels from 1923-2005. Its best known adaptation is Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 film. 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the novel’s first publication.

A Clockwork Orange will pay TOM 20 – 22 September 2012, according to the following schedule: Thursday 20 September, 20:00 // Friday 21 September, 14:00 // Friday 21 September, 20:00 // Saturday 22 September, 20:00. Duration: Approx. 1hr40, including interval. Recommended as suitable for ages 14+.
