5 GUYS CHILLIN' to Return to King's Head Theatre This February
Chemsex: the use of drugs, often illegal ones, to increase pleasure during sex - Cambridge Dictionary
Following a successful run at Brighton Fringe in 2015 and two previous sold-out and critically acclaimed runs at the King's Head Theatre, Peter Darney's 5 GUYS CHILLIN' returns this February.
5 GUYS CHILLIN' is a graphic, gripping, funny and frank verbatim drama exposing the gay 'Chill-Out' scene. From surgeons to students, couples to kink; guys that love it and lost guys longing to be loved. An original look into the drug- fuelled, hedonistic, highly secretive world of Chem-Sex, Grindr and instant gratification. Taken from over 50 hours of interviews with guys found through Grindr and other social media, this is an important look at the relatively new scene that social media apps have been fundamental in creating.
Artistic director of the King's Head Theatre, Adam Spreadbury-Maher, says "This play tackles the most serious, urgent gay men's health crisis since the outbreak of HIV in the early 80s. HIV and hepatitis infections are on the rise again due to shared needle use and unprotected sex on the chill-out scene, causing a huge strain on individuals, communities and the NHS. From just 3 nights at Brighton Fringe, we are now extending the show for a third month to keep the conversation going about this crisis. We're proud to be doing such important verbatim work."
After a bombastic, exciting and innovative 45th year, the King's Head continues its new artistic policy of being a crucible of new writing and critical rediscoveries, whilst also welcoming the much-anticipated return of pub opera, with the aim of being the best pub theatre in London. The King's Head offers an unashamedly broad church of programming including theatre, musical theatre and opera, transfers to and from the biggest arts festivals in the world, and a trail-blazing policy of ethical employment on the fringe -- if it's on here, you won't see it anywhere else.
