Photo Flash: Meet the Stars of David Auburn's PROOF at Red Sandcastle

By:

New Toronto-based independent theatre company Theatre UnBlocked will present its inaugural production: David Auburn's Proof, running March 9 through 19, 2017, at the Red Sandcastle Theatre, 922 Queen East. BroadwayWorld has a sneak peek at the stars below!

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony for Best Play (2001), Proof tells the story of a young woman who has put her academic career on hold to care for her father, a once-famous mathematician suffering from mental illness. Now that she can return to the field, she is haunted by the question: how much of her father's madness-or genius-has she inherited?

This beautifully written and wryly funny work explores themes of women in male- dominated fields, the perennial fear of being past your prime, and how we treat the mentally ill in our society. It is a love story AND a mystery that will leave you guessing right up until the very end!

The cast features Karen Slater as Catherine, who appeared in last summer's wildly popular The Hogtown Experience and best new play Donors (Safeword Theatre). Catherine's father Robert is played by Dan Willmott, an international award-winning actor and voice artist whose screen credits include Supernatural, Smallville, and most recently, a recurring role in Fargo. Toronto-based actors Andrea Irwin and Chris Peterson round out the cast as Catherine's older sister Claire and Robert's student Hal.

Director Carl Jackson is a former neuroscientist with degrees in physics and psychology, and a lifelong passion for theatre. The creative team also includes production designer Yehuda Fisher, costume designer Victoria Banjavcic, stage manager Cristina Hernandez, assistant stage manager Ashley Groves, and lighting operator Liam Stewart.

Theatre UnBlocked was founded by Toronto-based actor Carina Cojeen, who appeared this past summer in the Fringe Kids hit Pirates Don't Babysit and Unit 102/Leroy Street's Much Ado About Nothing. Theatre UnBlocked's mandate is to present "contemporary classics": great texts which require only talented actors and a deft directing touch to be enjoyed.

Performances are Friday through Sunday evenings (March 10-12, 17-19) at 8pm, with a preview Thursday March 9 at 8pm, and one matinee on Sunday March 12 at 2pM. Prices are $20 advance, $25 at door, $15 arts worker/student, and PWYC at the door for two shows (preview Mar 9 8pm and matinee Sun Mar 12 2pm). Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2863693.
