Best New Play Contest Winner WOMEN OF THE FUR TRADE Comes to Toronto Fringe ImageVault Projects presents Women of the Fur Trade, a new play by Anishinaabe playwright Frances Koncan, playing at the Theatre Passe Muraille Mainspace at the 2018 Toronto Fringe Festival!

"Three little women live three little lives in a tiny Little Room in a very little Fort. They spend their time drinking tea, rocking in their rocking chairs, and waiting. But who are they? What do they want? And how they can get it when they're not even allowed to vote? Cecilia, the British one, longs for her husband to return from battle. She loves her life at the Fort, and takes pride in fulfilling her duties as a woman. Eugenia, the Ojibwe one, spends half her time kicking ass hunting and trapping, and half the time trying to convince the men to trade with her (which they won't. Rude.). And Marie-Angelique, the Metis one, only wants one thing: Louis Riel. Women of the Fur Tradeis a timeless tale of rebellion, facial hair, and the the search for identity as cultures clash during a formative time of Canadian history."

Women of the Fur Trade will play 7 performances at the Toronto Fringe Festival before returning to Winnipeg, where it will be performed at the Dalnavert Museum as part of their 2018-2019 performance series. It will be developed in to a full-length play as a part of the Animikiig Creators Unit at Native Earth. The play stars Joelle Peters, Haley Vincent, and Elizabeth Whitbread. It is written, directed, designed, and stage managed by Frances Koncan.

Women of the Fur Trade was created and produced by Vault Projects, an interdisciplinary theatre collective based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with financial support from the Winnipeg Arts Council and the Nellie McClung Foundation Arts Legacy Award, and dramaturgical support from Lindsay LaChance at Playwrights Theatre Centre, Brian Drader at the Manitoba Association of Playwrights, Krista Jackson at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, and Jessica Carmichael at Animikiig Creators Unit with Native Earth.
