Review: THE WIZARD OF OZ at Hale Centre Theatre
Review: THE WIZARD OF OZ at Hale Centre Theatre
Phoenix: Cheyenne Lewis • May 19, 2026
Nearly 90 years after the film premiered and over 120 years since the novel was published, this great American fairytale is a story to love. This rendition of the musical is great for people both young and old. There’s no place to see THE WIZARD OF OZ like Hale Centre Theatre.

Review: WORKING Mixes Humor and Dignity at Front Porch Theatricals
Pittsburgh: Greg Kerestan • May 19, 2026
This Pittsburgh-centric update of the seventies cult musical bridges the gap between the old world and the new.

Delaware: Rosanne DellAversano • May 19, 2026
It doesn’t matter if you know the stage version, or the movie version, or don’t know anything about it, just know ARSENIC AND OLD LACE has an easy to follow plot that leads you down a path of hijinks straight to your funny bone.

Review: AT THE WAKE OF A DEAD DRAG QUEEN at Santa Fe Playhouse
Albuquerque: Jackie Camborde • May 19, 2026
he thing that stayed with me after this show was the ease and natural ebb and flow of conversation the two actors had; both Malcom-Petty and Sigl had volumes of script to memorize, but both took the words from the page and embodied them.

Review: PURPOSE at La Jolla Playhouse
Review: PURPOSE at La Jolla Playhouse
San Diego: ErinMarie Reiter • May 19, 2026
“Purpose”, now playing at La Jolla Playhouse through June 7, is a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play that takes one messy, snowed-in family weekend and turns it into something hilariously chaotic, emotionally sharp, and painfully recognizable.
Review: THE GREAT GATSBY at National Theatre
Review: THE GREAT GATSBY at National Theatre
Washington, DC: David Friscic • May 19, 2026
The current touring production of the Broadway musical The Great Gatsby tries to wrap its hand around the elusive and enigmatic novel of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald but can only succeed on the most basic level. It is a daunting task to try and adapt extremely poetic and enigmatic works like The Great Gatsby to any visual medium (in this, I do agree with critic John Simon ---there are really no optic equivalents to this type of writing ---as five flawed film adaptations have proven).

Review: WEST SIDE STORY Presented by Washington National Opera at The Music Center At Strathmore
Washington, DC: David Friscic • May 19, 2026
It was good to be back at the Washington National Opera for their thrilling performance of West Side Story after a year of extreme change for this vital world-renowned artistic organization/institution. As many people already know, the Washington National Opera has had to relocate to other venues to proactively create new artistic paradigms after some tough challenges at the Kennedy Center. (I was pleased to review this production on the night of May 14, 2026, at The Music Center at Strathmore
Review: YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN at Theatre Three
Review: YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN at Theatre Three
Long Island: Sam Desmond • May 19, 2026
The story follows the grandson of Victor Frankenstein, Frederick, as a trip to Transylvania becomes less about sorting his dead grandfather’s estate and more about taking up the family business of accidental monster making. To help him in his quest, Frederick has a team of quirky personalities who round out the non sequiturs so ubiquitous in a Mel Brooks piece.

Review: THE KEY OF DREAMS- THE SHADOWS LENGTHEN, Treowen, Wales
Scotland: Aliya Al-Hassan • May 19, 2026
It is now a few days since I left Treowen, a gorgeous 17th century Manor House set in the even-more-gorgeous Welsh countryside and I am still processing the experience. To call Lemon Difficult's The Key of Dreams simply an 'immersive experience' is to sell it very short. Where else can you spend 24 hours with the run of an entire house, crammed to the rafters with puzzles, clues to dark secrets and sinister rituals, where every decision you make may change the course of everything that happens next?

Review: Barber’s VANESSA – or Is It ERIKA? – Returns with Heartbeat Opera
Opera: Richard Sasanow • May 19, 2026
I caught up with Heartbeat Opera’s reinvention of Samuel Barber’s 1958 opera, VANESSA, to Giancarlo Menotti’s libretto, a few days after its debut at the Baruch Performing Arts Center in New York, after premiering last summer at the Williamstown (MA) Theatre Festival.

Review: AIN'T TOO PROUD-THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE TEMPTATIONS at Ogunquit Playhouse
Maine: Dan Marois • May 18, 2026
Jukebox musicals are practically a summer tradition at the Ogunquit Playhouse. In recent years, we’ve seen everything from Jersey Boys and Million Dollar Quartet to The Cher Show, On Your Feet!-The Story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Heartbreak Hotel, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and last year’s world premiere of When Elvis Met the Beatles.

Review: BRIGADOON at Pasadena Playhouse
Los Angeles: Andrew Child • May 18, 2026
Brava to Alexandra Silber for capturing all the heart and humor of Lerner’s original book with her thoughtful new adaptation and brava to Katie Spelman for dreaming up a Brigadoon that is as ebullient and spirited as it is deeply human.

Review: FALLING OUT Turns Chelsea Table + Stage into an Open Mic Confessional
Cabaret: Alex Del Cueto • May 18, 2026
FALLING OUT opened May 16 at Chelsea Table + Stage, blending immersive staging with a rock-driven score as a cast of actor-musicians pulled the audience directly into a story of heartbreak, creativity, and blurred ownership
