Joseph Tawadros Announces Concerts in Six Australian States and New Album Out in May

Joseph Tawadros AM, the Cairo born, Sydney raised award winning master of the Oud, a Middle Eastern lute. Joseph's original music has earned 12 ARIA nominations and 4 ARIA Awards. Currently UK based, he's on tour in Australia to promote the new album.

The new release, THE BLUEBIRD, THE MYSTIC & THE FOOL (JT2018A, MGM /Planet & iTunes) features Joseph and four outstanding musicians from the jazz and world music fields, inspired by Middle Eastern, classical and contemporary jazz, performing a dynamic and passionate set of new Tawadros pieces. 2018 marks 10 years since Joseph's hugely popular Angel Suite and this is the 'Angel band' re-united, enhanced with double bass.

Musicians on the album are: Joseph Tawadros -oud, Matt McMahon - piano, Karl Dunnicliff on double bass, Dimitry Vouros on clarinet and James Tawadros on Egyptian req and bendir.

Joseph said: "This album is organic music making. Five musicians in one studio, a few microphones and a whole lot of imagination. The key was to listen. It's as important as the playing. These players not only possess great musicianship, they are great listeners. Listening to their fellow players, running with an idea, knowing went to say something musically and when not to."

The Bluebird the Mystic & the Fool featuring Joseph Tawadros - oud, Matt McMahon - piano, Karl Dunnicliff on double bass, Dimitry Vouros on clarinet, and James Tawadros on Egyptian req and bendir. Recorded in November 2017 at Church Street Studios Sydney by Damian de Boos-Smith.

Produced by Joseph Tawadros. Released through The Planet/MGM and iTunes.

Joseph is also touring as a special guest with the Australian Chamber Orchestra in May and June 2018, while also presenting his own concerts. The ACO will feature Tawadros originals in Hobart, Darwin and Tokyo.

In the last few years Joseph's original works have been performed by BBC Symphony Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras and the Academy of Ancient Music in London. In 2017 Joseph performed at the BBC Proms in Dubai, in Ukraine, Poland, Vienna, London, Manchester, as well as several Australian cities including the premiere of his Concerto for Oud and Orchestra with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Last years Live at Abbey Road album was reviewed with enthusiasm in Australia and the UK: "The playing throughout is technically astonishing and the interplay between the two brothers displays extraordinary empathy. Amid this fiery brilliance, reflective pieces ... demonstrate Tawadros's emerging maturity as a composer." Songlines Magazine U.K. Jan, 2018

Joseph Tawadros AM, is a multi- award winning virtuoso player of the Oud, a Middle Eastern lute. Joseph's music has brought middle-eastern, classical and contemporary jazz together seamlessly and he is considered by peers and music critics to be a truly original performer and an innovative composer.

On stage Joseph is more than just a brilliant musician: He is an engaging and articulate story-teller with a sharp line in quick humour and astute observations.

He has a million stories from on the road as a musician, his life day to day and about life as a constant outsider: as an immigrant child at Redfern Public School, an oud-obsessed Arab teenager, his family singing along with old Egyptian movies at home. The family's religion (Coptic Christianity) is a minority faith, often targeted with violence in Egypt. Joseph's anecdotes and tales are poignant, irreverent and hilarious. Audiences are as likely to laugh, cry or be utterly pin-drop silent.

Joseph, 34, was born in Cairo and grew up in Sydney. He was awarded the Order of Australia (AM) in 2016 for significant service to music as an accomplished oud performer, composer and recording artist. He is currently based in London.

Joseph has recorded 14 albums of original music, with 14 ARIA nominations and won 4 ARIA Awards for Best World Music Album and Best Soundtrack Album. His new album The Bluebird, the Mystic & the Fool is out in May 2018.

Joseph performs as a soloist or with his brother (virtuoso Egyptian percussionist James Tawadros) with his jazz group and a range of orchestras and other collaborators. He has performed his own works with BBC Symphony Orchestra, Academy of Ancient Music, O/Modernt String Quartet, Ukrainian National Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, Morphing Chamber Orchestra and others. He premiered his first Concerto for Oud and Orchestra with Melbourne Symphony in 2017 and will 'tour' the concerto with other orchestras in 2019.
