Belvoir Welcomes Samantha Meers as Chair of the Belvoir Board

By:

The Belvoir Board is pleased to announce that businesswoman and philanthropist Samantha Meers has been appointed Chair of the Board.

Meers previously served on the Belvoir Board from 2004 to 2006. She is the Deputy Executive Chairman of the Nelson Meers Group and co-founder and trustee of the Nelson Meers Foundation. She has a wealth of experience serving on boards of arts organisations, her current board appointments include Deputy Chair of the Federal Government's Creative Partnerships Australia, Chair of Documentary Australia Foundation, a trustee of the Art Gallery of NSW, and a director of the State Library of NSW Foundation. Meers is a member of Chief Executive Women and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

'Belvoir is Sydney's most iconic and beloved theatre company, and I am privileged to be returning to the board as Chair. Belvoir honours the stories of our generation, reflecting the diverse community in which we live and nurturing Australia's creative talent. At a time in which the arts is under increasing pressure, we need the leadership of vibrant cultural organisations such as Belvoir now more than ever before,' said Meers.

'I'm honoured to be taking the role of Chair following the exceptional contribution of Andrew Cameron AM, whose dedication and commitment to Belvoir, and the broader arts sector, is an inspiration. I look forward to the further growth of Belvoir under the visionary leadership of our Artistic Director Eamon Flack, Executive Director Brenna Hobson and her team, and the Belvoir board, and to working with Belvoir's community of personal, business and government partners to build on Belvoir's well-deserved success.'

Belvoir's Executive Director Brenna Hobson welcomed the appointment:

'Sam is an excellent appointment to Belvoir's Board, we are thrilled to have her joining us. She has the business and governance skills to lead the company in its future direction. Her passion for Belvoir's artistic and cultural mission is inspiring and I know she will be a wonderful Chair.'

Outgoing Chair Andrew Cameron AM served on the Belvoir Board for ten years, five as Chair. In this time he has offered exceptional guidance and governance. His support for the company's artistic ambitions has been unwavering.

'Belvoir is a wonderful Australian theatre company and I have been privileged to be Belvoir's Chair during a period of great transition for the company and the performing arts sector,' said Cameron. 'I have thoroughly enjoyed working with two outstanding Artistic Directors - Ralph Myers and Eamon Flack - and Belvoir's management team. I will continue to support and be engaged with Belvoir and will watch its future development with great interest. Samantha Meers is an outstanding appointment as incoming Chair and I am sure Belvoir will grow and thrive under her leadership.'

Of Cameron's legacy, Belvoir's Artistic Director Eamon Flack said: 'Andrew's been unreservedly supportive of the company's work and of its artists. His eye twinkles when he sees artists at work. He loves artistic risk and he loves boldness. He's a true philanthropist. We've been lucky to have him. It is our extra good fortune that Andrew will be sticking around as a member of The Belvoir Foundation.'
