One is from the West, the other from the East.
On paper, American Richard Siegal's ideas look like secret formulae. In real life, he lets dance come together with other art forms – design, visual art, architecture, music, literature … The results stimulate the mind as well as the soul, occasionally getting the audience involved. His creation for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani flows over the stage, extending through the auditorium, out into the foyer. Richard Siegal has been the recipient of a number of prestigious awards. In 2005, he started The Bakery in Paris, a centre for artistic development in the fields of performance, dance and multimedia, which has attracted many of the most creative people on the international art scene.
Hiroaki Umeda from Japan also works through other art forms. His works are very visual – as well as being a choreographer and dancer, he is also a photographer and video artist. In the year 2000, he established his own dance company and with his very first creation, he had already raised expectations in international circles. Hiroaki Umeda’s work encompass installations, sound and light art. They are both minimalistic and radical, subtle and at the violent.
