Sheldon Concert Hall Presents McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension, 11/19

By:

The Sheldon presents John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension, Friday, November 19 at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. One of the most versatile and influential guitarists of our time, McLaughlin is joined by Gary Husband, Etienne M'Bappe and Mark Mondesir.

Grammy award-winner John McLaughlin is known as an extraordinary solo artist, a collaborator and sideman for artists such as MiLes Davis, as the leader of both the ground breaking Mahavishnu Orchestra and the revolutionary indo-jazz group Shakti, and as the composer of some of the most stunning classical jazz-fusion pieces written. Through the almost four decades of his career, one constant has been his artistry as a guitarist and improviser.

McLaughlin's virtuosity has been on display in a number of settings throughout his celebrated career, beginning in the early 1960s as the electric guitarist for Georgie Fame's Blue Flames. From there, he covered a wide spectrum of musical territory. In the late '60s and early '70s, he explored electric guitar jazz-rock fusion on albums including Tony Williams's Lifetime and MiLes Davis' Bitches Brew, and in bands such as On the Corner and Live at the Cellar Door. In later years, McLaughlin appeared in movies, on television specials and in front of symphony orchestras performing his own commissioned works. It was through McLaughlin's tenure with MiLes Davis that he first got to work with Chick Corea, a kindred musical spirit with whom McLaughlin reconnected in 2008 to form The 5 Peace Band.

The 4th Dimension is McLaughlin's newest group and is the culmination of years of collaboration with musicians from many different cultures and musical traditions, both Eastern and Western. Their new album, To The One, "looks backwards and forwards simultaneously," says McLaughlin. "The six original songs are hauntingly evocative - with roiling rhythmic swells, modal expanses, and telepathic group interaction echoing the profound influence of John Coltrane's 1965 spiritual jazz masterpiece A Love Supreme."

Tickets for John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension are on-sale now! Tickets are $45 orchestra/$40 balcony. Call MetroTix at 314.534.1111 or visit www.TheSheldon.org. For more information, contact The Sheldon during normal business hours, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
