Director/Designer Isaac Mizrahi Directs A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC in St. Louis

Famed director/designer Isaac Mizrahi will direct the upcoming production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC at the Opera Theatre in St. Louis. The production will run June 6th through 19th at the Opera Theatre and will feature conductor Stephen Lord. NIGHT MUSIC was written by Hugh Wheeler and features a score by Stephen Sondheim.

Born in Brooklyn, Mizrahi has, in addition to his designer clothing line, created costumes for movies, theater, dance and opera in collaboration with such luminaries as Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp, Mikhail Baryshnikov and The Roundabout Theatre Company, among others. In 2002 Mizrahi received the Drama Desk Award for his costume designs for The Women. Last year, he made his costume design debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera's Orpheus and Eurydice.

Also an accomplished author, Mizrahi wrote the comic book series Sandee the Supermodel and in 2008 published How to Have Style. He has been featured in films and TV shows including Sex & the City, Ugly Betty and Celebrity Jeopardy. For many years, Mizrahi hosted his own series on the Oxygen and Style networks and can currently be seen in his daily web-series WATCHISAAC.COM.

Based on Ingmar Bergman's film Smiles of a Summer Night, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC is set in a weekend country house in turn of the century Sweden, bringing together surprising liaisons, long simmering passions and a taste of love's endless possibilities. Hailed as witty and wildly romantic, the story centers on the elegant actress Desirée Armfeldt and the spider's web of sensuality, intrigue and desire that surrounds her.

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC - featuring a score by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler - originally opened in 1973 at Broadway's Shubert Theatre and ran for 601 performances. Produced and directed by Harold Prince, the production garnered six Tony Awards® including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The Sondheim score features one of the composer's best-known songs, "Send in the Clowns," as well as "Every Day a Little Death," "The Miller's Son" and "A Weekend in the Country."

Trevor Nunn's production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC debuted to critical acclaim at London's Menier Chocolate Factory in November 2008 and subsequently transferred to the West End where it played a successful limited engagement through July 25, 2009 at the Garrick Theatre.

The production will run from June 6th through 19th. Tickets pricing is not yet available.

Opera Theatre was founded in the spring of 1976 by Richard Gaddes, with a small group of opera-lovers who were determined to bring festival-quality opera to the St. Louis area. With a budget of $135,000 they presented an 11-performance season in English with a mixture of familar and unconventional repertory sung by the best young artists -- a style of production which continues to this day. In 1985 General Director Charles Mackay joined famed Artistic Director Colin Graham and Music Director Stephen Lord to lead the company until 2008, when he was named to succeed Richard Gaddes as General Director of the famed Santa Fe Opera. MacKay is now succeeded by Timothy O'Leary, who joins Music Director Stephen Lord and Artistic Director James Robinson as leaders of the company.
