Bard SummerScape's 2016 Season Includes 'Puccini', Arts and Music Festival and More!
by Christina Mancuso - Feb 18, 2016

This summer marks another historic milestone for the annual Bard SummerScape festival. For the first time since its founding, this season's focus is on the music and culture of Italy, with seven weeks of music, opera, theater, dance, film, and cabaret keyed to the theme of the 27th Bard Music Festival, "Puccini and His World." This intensive examination of the life and times of Giacomo Puccini opens a window onto Italy's rich musical heritage from Palestrina to Menotti, by way of the most popular and successful - yet, paradoxically, frequently critically underrated - opera composer of all time. Complementing the music festival, some of the Tuscan master's most compelling compatriots provide other key SummerScape highlights. These include a rare, fully staged production of Iris, a forerunner of Madama Butterfly by Puccini's close contemporary Pietro Mascagni; the world premiere of Demolishing Everything with Amazing Speed, four newly unearthed puppet plays from leading Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero, as reimagined by Dan Hurlin;the world premiere of Fantasque, a new ballet set to the music of Respighi and Rossini by John Heginbotham and Amy Trompetter; a film series on "Puccini and the Operatic Impulse in Cinema"; and the return of Bard's authentic and sensationally popularSpiegeltent, hosted by the inimitable Mx. Justin Vivian Bond. Taking place between July 1 and August 14 in the Frank Gehry-designed Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts and other venues on Bard College's stunning Hudson River campus, SummerScape's 2016 offerings provide new opportunities to discover that, as Time Out New York puts it, "the experience of entering the Fisher Center and encountering something totally new is unforgettable and enriching." Tickets go on sale on Monday, February 15; click here for more information.

'Crossing the Rubicon A Personal Journey of Self-Acceptance of a Proud Gay Man' by D Nathan Cieszynski Launches
by Christina Mancuso - Jan 19, 2016

Nathan's Light is pleased to announce the launch of 'Crossing the Rubicon' by D Nathan Cieszynski. This book was written to help individuals find their piece of contentment, find their path to self-acceptance and release the chains that bind them to half-lives and shadows as Nathan shares his personal struggles in the hope that he will inspire readers with his story. This is the coming of age story of a proud gay man: a raw look at his inner battles and outward struggles as he tried in vain to be what the world wanted him to be before finally understanding that being true to himself and accepting himself was the only way to survive in a straight world. 'Crossing the Rubicon - A Personal Journey of Self-Acceptance of a Proud Gay Man' was extracted from many years of journals, detailing Nathan's memories of days not easily forgotten. Nathan chronicles his inner battles to accept who he was through major turning points in his life, as he came to accept the struggles and relationships which led him to embrace those things about himself that he previously wanted to destroy. 'I never thought I would read the memories of a gay man and find inspiration and insight into my own life with a new understanding of who I was. As a straight man I saw so much of my own struggles and understood that I created most of them myself,' said Bryan C. 'I'm sitting in a plane on the runway waiting to take off, flight was delayed, so I decided to do some reading. Big mistake, about 3 or 4 pages into chapter 5 and I am laughing out loud. Hate to put the book away. People are looking at me like I am crazy!!' said Sonia K. 'Crossing the Rubicon' features transformative events, moments and action steps that may provide inspiration to those in the second half of life, whether young or old, so that they can learn how to: Find their path to self-acceptance in order to find happiness, contentment and most of all, love, in your life Take blame and criticism for who they are 'Crossing the Rubicon' will surely convince you that it does get better and that living life is so much better than living in fear. About D. Nathan Cieszynski D. Nathan Cieszynski was born in Denver, Colorado in 1971. Born to a military family, he lived in many parts of the country. Nathan spent his most formative, coming-of-age years living in Guatemala, Central America, returning to the United States when he was twenty-five years old. Nathan was and is an avid reader, having used books as an escape from a world he did not understand, as a way to hide his identity from those around him. He learned at an early age the power of the written word, and began journaling his life. Nathan works as the Housing Counseling Supervisor for a non-profit fair housing agency in Ontario, California, providing education and assistance to new and existing homeowners, and those struggling to make their monthly mortgage payments. Nathan also teaches financial literacy workshops designed for young adults, senior citizens, and all those in between, and provides money management and financial education to those transitioning from homelessness to housing.
