Puppets and live performers enact an enigmatic tale of early World War II in 'King Executioner,' the newest creation of Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre written and directed by Vit Horejš. The play is loosely based on 'When you are a King, You will be an Executioner' ('A Jak Krolem a Jak Katem Bedzies,' 1968) by the Polish magical realist novelist Tadeusz Nowak (1930-1991). Theater for the New City will present the world premiere of the work March 21 to April 7. Get a first look at the production in the photos below!

Yan Pascal Tortelier Leads BSO in Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, Now thru 2/2

One of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's (BSO) most popular guest conductors, Yan Pascal Tortelier, returns to lead the BSO in Ravel's arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition tonight, January 31, 2013 and Friday, February 1, 2013 at 8 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 8 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore. The program also features returning pianist Orion Weiss, who will perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 27. Also on the program is Hindemith's Concert Music for Strings and Brass. Houston Grand Opera Announces Expanded Season

With rave reviews for Puccini's La boheme and Rossini's Italian Girl in Algiers to its credit, Houston Grand Opera's season is up and running. Starting in January, the company offers productions of Mozart's Don Giovanni and Kern and Hammerstein's classic American musical Show Boat, which bring with them the company debuts of conductor Trevor Pinnock, bass Morris Robinson, baritone Adrian Erod, Broadway legend Tommy Tune, and more. They will be followed in March by HGO's original and highly acclaimed production of Cruzar la Cara de la Luna / To Cross the Face of the Moon, a mariachi opera by Jose "Pepe" Martinez and Leonard Foglia. Tickets are on sale now and moving quickly for this winter repertory period, which accounts for 14 of the season's 44 performances, a 38 percent increase from an average of 32 performances in recent seasons. This increase, as well as HGO's 34 percent growth in subscription sales and more than $112 million fundraising effort over the last five years, clearly identifies HGO as today's most successful American opera company.

St. Dunstan’s Theatre Presents IT CAME FROM MARS!, 10/12-28

Comic timing, ditz, efficiency to a fault and the threat of Martians taking over the world rock a 1930's radio show in some of the most hilarious ways in the St. Dunstan's opening play, It Came From Mars. The audience will giggle and guffaw as the six zany characters, led by an equally zany director, surprise and delight the audience with split-second comic timing in a show written by Ann Arborite Joseph Zettelmaier. St. Dunstan's production of It Came From Mars will only be the 4th production of the show. It debuted professionally in 2010, by the Performance Network of Ann Arbor, MI. It was then performed at the Williamston Theatre (MI), and once at a theatre in Ireland called The Breakaway Project. St. Dunstan's will be the first community theatre to have the rights to the show.
