Golda's Balcony Broadway

The play follows the life of Golda Meir – from Russian immigrant to American schoolteacher to the epicenter of international politics as the fourth Prime Minister of Israel. Gibson's drama pits Meir against Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger with the threatened launch of nuclear weapons against her enemies, unless the U.S. comes to her country’s aid. In turn deeply funny and frighteningly prescient, Golda’s Balcony poses the altogether too contemporary question of What if the Middle East exploded?

Notwithstanding the lingering leeriness I feel about going to see them, one-person shows can be memorable and truly special. Billy Crystal's 700 Sundays, Frank Gorshin's Say Goodnight, Gracie and Colin Quinn's Long Story Short stand out as the best that I've seen by men, while I'd point to Julie Harris's Belle of Amherst, Lily Tomlin's The Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe, and Tova Feldshuh's Golda's Balcony as the best by women - plus two more at Spoleto this year, Avital Lvova's Angel and Ayodele Casel's While I Have the Floor.

The Sarasota Opera House, in conjunction with the Florida Holocaust Museum and the Tampa Jewish Community Centers & Federation presented a reading of The Soap Myth written by Jeff Cohen and directed by Pam Berlin. The story is set more than 50 years after the end of World War II, and dramatizes the warm friendship that develops between a young Jewish journalist and a cantankerous Holocaust Survivor on a crusade about the 'soap' displayed in Holocaust museums. In question is, did the Nazis make soap from the corpses of murdered Jews? The play grapples with the evil of anti-Semitism masquerading as Holocaust denial. The Soap Myth asks provocative questions like 'Who has the right to write history?' and 'How does a survivor survive surviving?' The reading commemorates International Holocaust Remembrance Day and dramatizes the powerful confrontation between a survivor's memory and contradicting historical evidence, or lack thereof.
