The New York Philharmonic has announced the 2016-17 season's Insights at the Atrium series, free events exploring themes of the Philharmonic's concert season through multimedia lectures, conversations, and panel discussions. Expanding to eight events this season, Insights at the Atrium has gained in popularity since its inception in 2011, helping thousands of audience members delve more deeply into the music, musicians, and ideas featured in the Philharmonic's season through a dynamic and accessible forum. All events are held at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center and begin at 7:30 p.m.

Jazz pianist Aaron Diehl will join Music Director Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic for the 2016-17 season Opening Gala Concert, performing Gershwin's Concerto in F in his New York Philharmonic debut, Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. The concert launches the New York Philharmonic's 175th anniversary season and Music Director Alan Gilbert's farewell season with a program honoring the Philharmonic's legacy of premiering important works, particularly music connected to New York City. Between 1925 and 1950, Luella Pool Saxby wrote a story about her great-grandmother's life, taken directly from her diaries, but she never fulfilled her dream of publishing her work. Handing it to her granddaughter, Joan, just weeks before she died, Saxby's wish has come true with 'But One Husband: The Truth about Mormon History by a Woman Who Lived It' (published by iUniverse), a true, historical autobiography of Sarah Ann Thirkell. Joan embarks on a new marketing campaign for the book.

Playwrights Horizons, under the leadership of Artistic Director Tim Sanford and Managing Director Leslie Marcus, just announced the six productions of its 2016/2017 Season. The six new works will be presented at the theater company's home at 416 West 42nd Street.

'The New World Symphony: Dvorak in America' is a puppet and object theater work examining the influence of African-American and Native American music upon the great 19th-century Czech composer Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904). The piece is written and directed by Vit Horejš and performed by Czechoslovak American Marionette Theatre. It traces how Dvorak helped America accept its beautiful multicultural musical traditions by his enthusiasm for African-American and Native American music during his short but influential time in the USA. La MaMa Theatre will present the play's world premiere run March 10 to 27, 2016 in its Ellen Stewart Theatre, 66 East 4th Street (East Village). Composer and Musical Director is saxophonist James Brandon Lewis.

Pianist Kirill Gerstein's world premiere recording of the 1879 version of Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto and Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16, performed with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and conducted by James Gaffigan, has been nominated for a 2016 BBC Music Magazine Award in the Concerto category.

The New York Philharmonic will present Rachmaninoff: A Philharmonic Festival, tonight, November 10-28, 2015, featuring 24-year-old Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov performing three of the composer's piano concertos and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini over the course of three consecutive all-Rachmaninoff programs, each led by a different conductor: Cristian Macelaru (in his Philharmonic debut), Neeme Jarvi, and Ludovic Morlot.

Pacific Symphony and Music Director Carl St.Clair explore great masterworks by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, two Romantic-era composers who were united by their friendship, passion for music and love of the same woman: Clara Wieck. A virtuosic pianist herself, Clara's influence prevails throughout the music of both composers. Shortly after marrying Schumann, she encouraged her new husband (although they had been friends for years) to write a piano concerto for her to premiere. The result has become one of the most popular piano concertos of the repertoire. Interpreting its unpredictable moods and colorful emotions for the Symphony's concert is French pianist David Fray. Son-in-law of the great conductor Riccardo Muti, Fray has gained a reputation for his individualistic, expressive and meditative performances. “David Fray is alive to the way the music moves at every point and skilled at evoking worlds of sound beyond the piano,” wrote Gramophone Online.
