Haven Theatre Company and Executive Director Carol Cohen have announced Josh Sobel as the organization's newly appointed artistic director. Sobel is an established freelance director in the Chicago storefront theater scene, having worked with a variety of companies such as A Red Orchid Theatre, The Ruckus, Collaboraction, New Leaf Theatre and Strawdog Theatre Company, where he also serves as literary manager and ensemble member. In addition to assuming the role of artistic director for Haven Theatre Company, Sobel will be directing We Three at the side project this fall and The Pied Piper at Strawdog Theatre Company next summer. He is a graduate of Oberlin College.

Steep Theatre Company has announced the programming for its upcoming 16th season, which continues the company's tradition of presenting bold plays from today's most exciting playwrights, brought to life by fearlessly honest ensembles and visionary directors. Season 16 will feature a world premiere from Chicago playwright Alex Lubischer, a U.S. premiere from Olivier Award-winning playwright Mike Bartlett, a U.S. premiere from rising English playwright Cordelia Lynn, and a Midwest premiere from California-based playwright Lauren Yee. After four years as a resident company in Strawdog Theatre's Hugen Hall, The Forks & Hope Ensemble is producing their first fully devised work at Jackalope's Frontier this August. A Hero's Journey uses Joseph Campbell's 'hero's journey' theory to explore humanity's impulse to tell and re-tell stories of mythological heroes. Using the ensemble's trademark playful, movement-based aesthetic, each performer goes on their own heroic journey, which reveals parallels to their own lives. Audience members can expect to meet epic characters like Odysseus, King Sejong, and Psyche on a human scale in an intimate, imaginative setting.
