BWW Review: MTW Presents a Vocally Thrilling EVITA
by Don Grigware - Feb 13, 2017

Don't cry for Eva! Tim Rice's & Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita has had a thirty-nine year international love affair with the public since it  premiered in 1978 in London and in 1979 on Broadway. The latest revival in regional theatre is currently at MTW in Long Beach. An operetta, or rock opera, with no spoken dialogue, and based on Eva Duarte Peron and husband Juan Peron of Argentina, the story documents the rise to power of a simple peasant girl to the rank - almost - of Vice-President of her country. I say almost because she became too ill to accept the nomination in 1951 and passed into immor

BWW Review: I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO Is A Bold And Searing Decoding of America's Racial Divide
by Herbert Paine - Feb 10, 2017

James Baldwin spoke truths about the racial divide in America with an economy of language, a piercing intensity, an indisputable authority, and an authenticity that is sorely absent in today's discussions. Thanks to Raoul Peck, that gap has been filled by one of the most important documentaries of our time, I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO, which has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature for the 89th Academy Awards and will be screened at this year's Sedona International Film Festival, which runs from February 18th through the 26th.

Dance Mission Theatre transforms into a time machine in SATIN & SWING
by Julie Musbach - Jan 29, 2017

SOULSKIN Dance is proud to present a brand new work SATIN & SWING as part of their 4th Season in San Francisco. Artistic Director and Choreographer Adrianna Thompson seeks to engage audiences in a study of two eras, the 1920s and the present. Dance Mission Theatre transforms into a time machine, transporting us back to the 1920s. Glitz and glam sparkle from the dingy corners of a speakeasy. Raucous jazz blares, bringing bejeweled and sequined dancing flapper girls to life. An evening of indulgence has begun. The entry notes of Prince's 'Erotic City' ring in your ears, an echo from another time. Suddenly you notice the writing on the wall. The crash of overindulgence is imminent.

BWW Review: 'Merry Christmas!' from Chaffin's Barn

While there are always rumors of closings and real estate transactions happening willy-nilly, Chaffin's Barn continues to thrive and to entertain and to give both audiences and theater folk an opportunity to get to know one another better and to be transported and transformed via the magic of live theater. I hope that Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre remains a vital part of Music City long after I've been reassigned to review shows in the afterlife.

Rossini's GUILLAUME TELL to Open at the Met for First Time in 80 Years, Today
by BWW News Desk - Oct 18, 2016

A new production of Rossini's Guillaume Tell, the composer's final opera, will open at the Met on October 18 in the first company performances of the ambitious historical epic in more than 80 years-and its first-ever Met performances in its original French. The new staging is directed by Pierre Audi, the incoming Artistic Director of the Park Avenue Armory and conducted by Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi. Rossini's opera tells the story of a Swiss revolutionary on a quest for freedom. Its famous "William Tell Overture" is one of the best-known and most performed pieces in the standard classical repertory, though the opera, which makes considerable demands on its stars, orchestra, and chorus, has rarely been presented in modern times. Gerald Finley will star in the title role, which he has made a specialty of in recent seasons, with Marina Rebeka as the Princess Mathilde;  Bryan Hymel as her suitor Arnold; Maria Zifchak as Tell's wife Hedwige; Janai Brugger as their son Jemmy; Italian bass Marco Spotti in his Met debut as Walter Furst; Kwangchul Youn as Arnold's father Melcthal; and John Relyea as Gesler.

BWW Review: Don't Cry for Cabrillo's Must See EVITA
by Don Grigware - Oct 17, 2016

Tim Rice's & Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita has had a thirty-eight year international love affair with the public since it  premiered in 1978 in London and in 1979 on Broadway. The newest revival in regional theatre is currently at Cabrillo in Thousand Oaks until October 23 only. An operetta based on Eva Duarte Peron and husband Juan Peron of Argentina, the story documents the rise to power of a simple peasant girl to the rank - almost - of Vice-President of her country. I say almost because she became too ill to accept the nomination in 1951 and passed into immortality in 1952 after a seven year reign as First Lady of Argentina, which began in 1946. Evita: criminal or saint? has been the topic of books and documentaries. As assured and confident as any long-running musical now - or ever, for that matter - on Broadway, the altogether worldly and completely engaging production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita, playing at Andrew Jackson Hall through September 18, gives Nashville audiences the kind of exceptional theater experience they've come to expect from Studio Tenn.
