Earl Watsons Releases Memoir of Hollywood's Grandeur
by Christina Mancuso - Nov 12, 2013

Built between 1923 and 1925, the famous Hollywood Hotel Knickerbocker was in its early days, a mainstay in the life of Hollywood's most glorious celebrities. But, looking at this aging hotel on Ivar Avenue, one probably wouldn't guess that it had much of a Hollywood history. Similarly, looking at author Earl Watson, readers probably wouldn't guess that he too, was a part of Hollywood's golden history.

BWW Reviews: MARILYN... MADNESS & ME - A Curiosity at El Portal's Monroe Forum
by Don Grigware - Sep 28, 2013

Frank V. Furino's world premiere play Marilyn MADNESS & Me, like the film My Week with Marilyn, puts a lesser known character in the lead and Marilyn is seen through his eyes, eyes filled with more than just lust and obsession...with real love for Norma Jean. Now at the El Portal Monroe Forum, the play, although still in the rough stages, presents an engrossing slant on the human side of Norma Jean, how she affected one average human being, as well as presenting a panorama of historical events of the 60s, woven together by a curiously fictional thread.

Alternate American History to Unfold in Military Channel's WHAT IF...? ARMAGEDDON 1962
by Tyler Peterson - Sep 26, 2013

Most Americans aren't aware that a mere footnote in our country's history could have been the catalyst for a potentially catastrophic series of events in the early 1960s. Lee Harvey Oswald was not the first man who wanted to kill John F. Kennedy. Three years earlier, a deranged political fanatic named Richard Pavlick plotted to murder JFK with a suicide bomb in Palm Beach, Fla. Pavlick came within seconds of carrying out his plan just weeks before President-elect Kennedy was to take office. What if JFK had died in December 1960? In an all-new and riveting take on American history, the Military Channel, in collaboration with NBC News' Peacock Productions, presents the world premiere special WHAT IF...? ARMAGEDDON 1962 on Tuesday, October 22 at 10/9c. The documentary travels back to the 1960s to explore what might have happened if Lyndon B. Johnson was in office instead of JFK during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

BWW Reviews: Jim Brochu's CHARACTER MAN is a Triumphant, Tour de Force Tribute To Iconic Musical Theater Stars
by Stephen Hanks - Jul 12, 2013

About halfway through Jim Brochu's Saturday, June 29 performance at the Metropolitan Room of his new show Character Man, I realized I was witnessing what was probably the best cabaret show I'd seen this year, and perhaps was one of the best in my almost three years of reviewing cabaret. By the time the show ended, I had changed my mind. Not because the show fell apart in the second half, but because what Jim Brochu had created (and is opening tonight at the Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs, Florida, where it will be performed until August 11) was more than a cabaret show. Character Man is a delightful, extremely well-crafted Off-Broadway theater piece that is destined for a run that might rival his critically-acclaimed one-man Zero Mostel tribute show, Zero Hour, which played throughout the country between 2006-2012 and earned Brochu 2010 Drama Desk and Helen Hayes Awards.

BWW Reviews: A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM: CT Rep Makes it Funny Again
by Lauren Yarger - Jun 25, 2013

With its sexist plot, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM is one of those shows that probably was a riot in 1962, but seems like something is lacking when presented a half century later - until the CT Repertory version running as part of the Nutmeg Summer Series. This one, thanks to some solid performances, is funny again.
