Nashville's FUNNY Fannys: Sondra Morton of Keeping Scores' FUNNY GIRL
by Jeffrey Ellis - Apr 19, 2011

In the upcoming Keeping Scores' concert version of Funny Girl, set for April 29-May 1 at Boiler Room Theatre, director Scott Logsdon has cast 12 different, yet very funny and somehow uniquely qualified actresses to take on the iconic role of Fanny Brice. First brought to national, then international, acclaim by the legendary Barbra Streisand, the role of Fanny Brice is a coveted role among musical theater performers. Offstage things seem to be going all 'Kumbaya' - despite our best efforts to dig up some dirt. Let's face it, you gather all these divas together and there's got to be some turmoil backstage. Right? Today's Fanny kinda scares me, to be honest, and I just want to say right here and now that if I turn up missing after this interview comes to light, check the trunk of Sondra Morton's car. She'll be the brains behind my disappearance (she scares me). Because of all that, of course, Sondra is my favorite FUNNY Fanny. Yep, that's exactly what she is... my favorite...scout's honor. BWW Reviews: Boiler Room Theatre's CRIMES OF THE HEART
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 28, 2011

A favorite of theater audiences since its debut at the 1979 Humana Festival of New American Plays at the Actors' Theatre of Louisville, Crimes of the Heart is given a faithful and elegantly staged revival at Franklin's Boiler Room Theatre. The play moves along at a languid pace befitting its setting and time period - and the story told by the playwright is as engrossing and as richly drawn as it ever was. Moreover, you are struck by the notion that Crimes of the Heart is, indeed, a timeless piece of Southern literature, claiming its rightful place among our region's most memorable prose.

BWW Reviews: Street Theatre Company's HAIRSPRAY
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 26, 2011

There is so much energy, enthusiasm and heart found in Street Theatre Company's Hairspray that it's certain to keep your spirits buoyed for a long time after leaving the theater. Brought to the stage by a competent creative team and a huge cast of committed performers, the Scott Wittman-Marc Shaiman musical - featuring a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan based on John Waters' wholly original film - Hairspray is great big fun, featuring some lovable characters and one of the most infectious musical theatre scores around.

Five Questions for FIVE Divas
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 22, 2011

So far as I can tell, the best way to handle the situation - on Monday night, March 28, five of Nashville's most talented young divas aka Cori Laemmel, Erin Parker, Laura Matula, Megan Murphy Chambers and Melodie Madden Adams will be performing a cabaret entitled FIVE - is to send five other young divas (I'd suggest sequestering Laura Thomas Sonn, Heather Trabucco, Stacie Riggs, Jennifer Richmond and Erica Haines Cantrell, just off the top of my head) to an undisclosed location - there's got to be a bunker around here somewhere, what with Oak Ridge so close by - just in case someone drops a bomb on Street Theatre Company

SOUND OFF SPECIAL EDITION: GLEE Gets Sexy, But Does It Really Go There?
by Pat Cerasaro - Mar 9, 2011

How does Season 2B of GLEE stack up against the first season and a half of the show? Did Gwyneth make 'Sexy' truly titillating and tremendous? Has GLEE finally found its rhythm and found a way to contain the unyielding beast it is? The method to the madness and more in this analysis of Season 2B so far (from post-Super Bowl 'Sue Sylvester Shuffle' all the way up to Tuesday's 'Sexy') and, of course, the Top Ten songs you need to download right now - after all, the song downloads are what make it unique (and uniquely successful) and have helped it to become an entertainment institution rather than just a little TV show.

What shows made the list? Nashville's favorite musicals
by Jeffrey Ellis - Feb 9, 2011

If you were asked to name Nashville's Top Ten Favorite Musicals, what show would you name as number one? Perhaps surprisingly, when that question was posed to a group of Nashville theater folk, the number one-ranked show is Les Miserables (but perhaps it's not that surprising, since Victor Hugo's book was a huge hit in the American South upon its initial publication in this country), followed by A Chorus Line, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods claiming the remaining slots in the Top Five.

America is Climbing the Walls Literally
by Trish Vignola - Jan 16, 2011

With the popularity of shows like Spiderman - Turn off the Dark and performance groups like Cirque du Soleil, let's face it. America is climbing the walls… literally. The popularity of Aerial work is growing...fast. Capitalizing on this momentum, the Manhattan Movement & Arts Center presented the first (of what they hope is many) Aerial Showcases yesterday. Featuring artists of different age and career levels, MMAC showcased the local 'Who's Who' of the Aerial arts.

Sweeney Todd’s Unsustainable Business Model on Display at the Vagabonds
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Oct 10, 2010

Potter directs Sweeney (Edward J. Peters) in such fashion that he seldom becomes such a ghoul he ceases to be human. Freddy Kreuger has a back story, but he's not a tragic hero because of it; Sweeney is.

Fabulous Funny Girl in Sacramento
by Don Grigware - Aug 14, 2010

Funny Girl is rarely mounted anywhere. Seeing the show - somewhat flawed: could have a stronger book - but one that I adore - in Sacramento this week, it dawned on me why. You must have one singularly incredible star performer - one who can act and sing greater than most (the greatest star - please forgive, Mr. Merrill!), and let's face it, there are many talented ladies available, but just not that good, at least not up to the unforgettable Barbra Streisand who originated the part.

An Exciting Endgame-Steppenwolf's Endgame Closes 6/6
by Trish Vignola - Jun 6, 2010

Let's face it. The chance to see an incredibly dynamic cast, like Endgame, is an honor that does not come along every day. The audience of last night's show behaved absolutely terribly and made the show incredibly hard to watch. Yeah, Beckett is not an easy playwright to absorb. I get that. However, that does not give you the right to let your cell phone ring multiple times in a show. Unless you are a doctor (and in that case, put it on vibrate), you are not that important. Oh, and the coup de grace? The man next to me was outright heckling William Petersen. What? This isn't Zannies (and even if it was, that's still not acceptable).

SOUND OFF: IDIOT's Delight
by Robert Diamond - May 27, 2010

This week, we are taking a listen to the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Green Day's rock opera AMERICAN IDIOT. The show was met with appreciative reviews, yet it seems audiences and the Tony committee are slightly less enthusiastic. So is it an American Classic, An Idiotic Delight or a 21st Century Breakdown? Let's see...
