Mad Cat Continues Season with Vaclav Havel's Subversive AUDIENCE and PROTEST
by Julie Musbach - Jan 29, 2017

Mad Cat continues its 17th season with a production of two of Vaclav Havel's sharp political dramas AUDIENCE and PROTEST. The subversive Czechoslovakian playwright, Prime Minister & President, Vaclav Havel was a in danger of being declared a 'social parasite' by the neo-Stalinist regime of Gustav Husak when he wrote AUDIENCE & PROTEST back in 1975 & 1978. His plays had been banned and, in the time of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic of 1974, writers faced imprisonment if they did not have a stamp in the employment box of their Citizen Identification passport. Havel solved this problem by finding a job as a brewery hand. Havel rolled barrels in the basement of a regional brewery in Trutnov and the experience profoundly changed his writing. His work in the brewery suddenly gave him back the refreshing existential perspective 'from below, from where the absurd and grotesque dimensions of the world are always more plainly visible.' And then an incident occurred on the job that gave him the inspirational seed for what is his best loved, and arguably finest, play, AUDIENCE. Havel claimed the piece was written quickly and easily 'from the hip,' opening up a new way of working in the theater for Havel - writing his first autobiographical play.

It's 1978, and Wall Street is packed with cowboys gleefully eyeing up their new frontier: Latin America.

BWW Review: BUDDY - THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY at Theatre By The Sea
by Larry O'Brien - Jun 6, 2016

Theatre By the Sea (TBTS) in Wakefield, RI (I would have thought Matunuck) opens its season with a rousing version of BUDDY-THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY, a jukebox musical in two acts with a book written by Alan Janes, and music and lyrics by a variety of songwriters, mostly of course, Buddy Holly. Based on the life and career of the early rock and roller, the musical hews more closely to Holly's actual life story than the 1978 film version, which starred Gary Busey, and follows Holly from his struggles to escape country music and establish himself as a rocker, to his untimely death in a plane crash in 1959.

On Friday, May 27 at 8 p.m., Mr. Conlon leads Dvo?ak's deeply personal cantata, Stabat Mater, a work was written during a time of deep grief for the composer following the death of his children. This rarely-performed work is full of symbolism, following a journey of mourning to hope of Paradise. At the invitation of James Levine, Mr. Conlon made his May Festival debut in 1978 conducting Stabat Mater (the following year he began his storied tenure as Music Director). Joining the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and May Festival Chorus will be soloists Julianna DiGiacomo (soprano), Elizabeth DeShong (mezzo-soprano), Anthony Dean Griffey (tenor) and Kristinn Sigmundsson (baritone).
